I have activated the "no gui boot" option in W7 and may do so in Vista as well (new tweak for me).

Does anyone know if I crash and the prompt for "safe mode" selction should appear, will I see it with this option on?

Note...In W7, I am not getting the "Aurora" screen which I think presents itself in Vista with this setting on (from what I read)...just a black screen until the password prompt.

Seems to save 2-3 seconds on boot-up time (5%-8% reduction for me). Boot up time is my biggest pet-peave with Windows. Would save me about 1 hour a year with my minimum 3 start-ups a day (morning, office, evening). :p

    Thanks,
    David

If you press F8 during No Gui Boot, you should be redirected to the Windows Boot Options menu, as usual. I have done this already, to boot into safe mode - it works.

Why not just sleep or hibernate instead of shutdown? You would save at least 1 day per year compared to shutting down your computer.

Ok. And yes...I just tested to enter the bios...and the prompt for W7 or Vista is still present. Looks fine to me!

    I do when I can!
But that depends on a bunch of stuff...but largely on this one:
I live in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam...and buzz around on a motorbike, which is far from smooth driving. Even in a padded bag, I have gobs of concerns! My previous machine was a really durable (but HEAVY) 15" Fujitsu Lifebook, which survived spills on the motorbike with me...dropped a few times...dragged/bounced around in a rolling bag for 100+ passport stamps as I travelled, etc...

With my new Vaio, I am trying to protect it a bit more. Anyhow, I think it is best to keep it completely powered off for such journeys.

    Thanks guys!

During standby or hibernate, the computer has the same durablility as it's turned off.

Agree that shut-down won't keep things from jiggling around...no change in durability. Perhaps hibernate is a good choice and something I have not really used before (or had poor experiences way back when...power management configs between Bios/OS, etc. and was not motivated to solve...old versions of Windows always seemed to need rebooting anyways).

With my new hardware and operating systems, perhaps that is the way to go.
    Cheers, David
