Windows update has not found SP1 yet... Anyone else have this problem? I was thinkin why, and could it be because I bought the laptop in US, but live in UK? I get other updates though...

If you have a good internet connection then you could use the direct link given in this thread to download the full package. That's what I did, and I've backed up the file onto CD in case I ever need to reinstall Vista.

There is a well known driver-related issue, where MS says that if a PC has certain drivers installed SP1 will not work correctly and/or not install. Affected PCs will NOT see SP1 in Windows Update.

That makes sense. All the PC's that won't find SP1 in Windows Update have got nVidia based graphics. The ones that have found SP1 are using Intel, SiS, or ATi graphics cards. I do remember reading something along those lines a while ago.

edit: All the PC's that I look after at work.

What drivers? I have a x3100, so it cannot be the nvidea related issue.

Yeah I haven't been notified to upgrade to SP1 yet. I am just waiting for Windows Update to notify me. I have Nvidea graphics but I think it has something to do with the language packs not being ready for Vista Ultimate. Does anyone else with this issue have Vista Ultimate?

NOT a good idea. If Windows update is not showing SP1 as being available, it is because Windows update thinks there is a reason NOT to offer it. Most of the time this is because of another prerequsite update not being in place. Or one of the known problematic drivers being installed. By-passing this and using brute force to install via the standalone SP1 installer may cause issues.

Check your drivers to make sure they are not affected. Second, install all important updates, hide all optional updates you don't install. That should do it.

But it can be an x3100-related issue, as it was on my computer. Check your display driver version in Device Manager (may be listed as GME965 chipset driver or something... but it's under display drivers) to see if it falls in the range that's on Microsoft's blacklist.

If windows update does not offer SP1 to you just wait until it does. The other users are right, it is a driver issue, If update senses that you have drivers that currently are a problem, it will not offer the update. The issues will be resolved and an SP1 update will be made available when it is ready. I downloaded the stand alone install, when auto update did not offer it to my HP8510W with Nvidia Quadro 570 (Guessing this is the issue here). I did the update manually, all seemed well. This morning it would not start up, Vista Business sensed this and offered to resolve the start up issue. It took quite a while and I worried iave I just F... this up? Well God Bless vista! It finally re booted and I am good as ever now (WHEW!!!). so I will wait until a version is ready for my drivers, and will conceede that Vista is a whole lot smarter than I thought it was.

Actually, on my machine I used a workaround to install newer, non-OEM approved Intel drivers for the x3100, and then installed SP1 via Windows Update, and it's all working great for me. But... do that at your own risk. If you're not the type to need the latest and greatest all the time, you might prefer to just wait for your OEM to release driver updates and then you should see SP1.

I don't think that getting SP1 is a big enough deal that waiting a little while for Microsoft to get the right stuff to you to have it work well is a big deal. Just my opinion though.

The wait is NOT from Microsoft. They have delivered their part. It is up to the OEM's to get the corrected drivers to folks. Lenovo and Dell need to step up and offer versions of the Intel Graphics driver for example. Intel has the driver, Lenovo and Dell are trady in getting it to the users in a fashion that it can be installed on the users machine.
