I am running XP on an HP DV6000 laptop and have lost sound to my internal
speakers, although I can still hear it through the earphone socket. I assume
that there must be a setting somewhere to switch them back on , but I cannot find it.

Double click on the speaker icon and check your audio settings.

    i suggests the following:

1.disable and enable your sound drivers.

    2. if no. 1 didn't work uninstall your sound drivers and then reboot. and then reinstall it again.

I would suspect a hardware problem with the earphone socket. This usually includes a simple mechanical switch which breaks the circuit to the internal speakers when the earphone plug is inserted. This switch should close when the plug is pulled out. Inserting / removing the earphone plug a few times may fix it. Otherwise it is dismantle and repair / replace.
