The audio just disappeared from my computer. The volume bar moves when I play music. It's an ASRock Z77E-ITX with Realtek ALC898 audio.
No software detection when I unplug the audio cable.
I've swapped HDD, reinstalled Windows 8.1, reset BIOS, removed CMOS battery, removed all unneeded connectors, graphics card and WLAN card, tried with stock Windows drivers and drivers from the manufacturer. I even removed the motherboard from the case.
Nothing helps.
The back audio jacks are grayed out in the Realtek audio control panel, The front panel looks present, but I hear no sounds.
One thing that caught my attention was that before I started the computer I could hear a faint noise coming and going in the speakers when the amplifier was on. I've never heard that before.
It seems like the onboard audio is broken, but is there anyting else I can try?

Uninstall the Realtek audio from your sound devices in Device Manager. Then reinstall and make darn sure the drivers you're using are the correct ones for both your Realtek audio and for Windows 8.1.
Oh, and welcome to the wonderful world of Windows 8.1 driver compatibility (or lack thereof)... -
Thank you for your help. I've been running Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 with this motherboard without any issues up until now. The audio worked yesterday but not today.
I'm using these drivers for the audio: ASRock > Z77E-ITX
I will try to reinstall the drivers once again, but I don't have much hope. -

Yeah, uninstall and make sure to check the "delete driver files" checkbox when you uninstall the device in device manager. If it still doesn't work, then the next question is did you install anything before the audio went south? Otherwise your spot on with the assumption that the audio chip has gone bad.
