Every browser I use treats hyperlinks to .png images as downloadable files and opens the appropriate dlm and open/save/save as prompt depending on the browser - instead of just displaying the image in the browser itself as it does for .jpg, .gif and so on.

Any ideas why this might be happening?

EDIT: some more details, it's the netbook in my sig and it's happening in Chrome, FF, IE8 and IE9.

    Hm.

Either there is some "security" software interfering, or you have some image manipulation software configured to be the default application for .png images.

Other image urls do work as expected?

Yeah, every other image url works normally.

I'm using avast antivirus and for image viewing I use irfanview (default image viewer for almost everything, including pngs). I also have Photoshop CS5 on here, but it's only associated with PSDs and related files.
