Posted 5 days ago no one answered, managed to solve most from other forums but left with this.Quite how, I don't know, but I have created a file folder that has 0 files and 70 folders.. all with the same name*. It's size is 0 bytes and it's size on disc is 0 bytes on start up gets placed on Desktop
Trying to delete the file folder or any of the folders brings up the instruction 'This folder contains items whose names are too long for the recycle bin'. Hitting OK on that brings up the further instruction 'The source file names are larger than is supported by the file system. Try moving to a location which has a shorter path name or try renaming to shorter names before attempting this operation'. I tried renaming a couple of folders to no avail. I have goggled problem spent hours, people have Had same problem but has never been solved.

Would like to help you but can't think of the problem...
All I could think of is renaming each of the 70folders one by one and deleting each one as you rename.
I guess you tried that though...

Try hitting SHIFT-DEL. It wil permanently delete the files, bypassing the recycle bin.

or try command prompt to delete the folders

    1. Launch the taskmanager
    2. Kill Explorer , so all process handles held by the Explorer will be released
    3. Open a CMD prompt using Taskmanger
    4. Navigate to the parent folder(s) you want delete and type

    Code:
    rmdir /r <dir name>

Vinumsv looking at files before I have courage to use cmd prompt, went into the multi same files until last one contained music albums all empty, when deleting them in groups this message comes up

The file "album art" is a system file if you remove it windows or another program may not work correctly

Are you sure you want to permanently delete it.

So you can see why I am nervous to delete what do you think.

Try using a 3rd party file manager - I use Total Commander - and delete the folders and files with it.

    cheers ...

Will look at total commander, atbnet folder on desktop location C:\Users\KEVIN\Desktop\cd I have renamed from music to cd but when I delete even dragging into recycle bin half deletes then says file name to long etc, skip files then deletes but comes back on next startup when I go through all sub folders until I find music albums (all empty)and try high-lite and multi delete thats when system file message comes up so you can see I am reluctant to try software that may destroy system files on desktop folder, do I just live with deleting folder after start up. Thanks for everyones help upto now.

As far as the system file problem, that's just windows rubbish. If the file is indeed named "album art" and not boot.ini or something, then it is safe to delete. I get that crap all the time, album art is clearly not a system file. And if you made all those folder your self (i.e. if you aren't deleting "Windows" or "system32") then none of those files are going to be system files of any importance. Disregard all such messages.

When you say you "renamed from music to cd" do you mean that you renamed the standard system folder called "Music" to "cd"?

If so, that's the source of your problem - monkeying around with the system folders like "Music", "Pictures", "Documents" and the like will get you no end of trouble (as you well know, now).

That's also, in part, why it's not letting you delete the folder - there are restrictions on deleting those special system folders because they're integrated into a lot of the system functionality.

Have you tried either (a) renaming the original folder back to "Music" or (b) going into the folder's properties dialogue and resetting its properties to default?

Did you rename any of the other default system folders as well? Also, are you working from an original installation of _Vista, or an upgrade from XP to _Vista? If it's an upgrade on top of XP, then you may also have messed up the so-called "junction points" that get created when such an upgrade is done; resetting the junction points is discussed in Microsoft's knowledgebase article KB930128.

Shyster No I renamed folder going on desktop but a while ago I think I deleted the correct music folder in c:\Users\KEVIN so I just created a new music folder called My music worked OK for a few months but now doing this. I have tried resetting to default this comes up
"unexpected error from perform redirection the filename or extension is to long" Vista was preinstalled on machine

Ok. That suggests to me that the underlying problem is that the system has "lost track" of its special system folders and needs help to restore them.

The first possible fix I found is in this thread from vistaheads.com: first, if you have another folder named "Music" that works, rename it to something different, like "Music_Folder" second, Click Start, type "shell:my music" (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER.

See if that restores your special system folder "Music."
