    Hi all,

I tried searching for this issue, but came up with nothing. I hope I didn't miss anything during my search.

Anyways, I have an issue where if I open up the ATi CCC window, I lose the video portion of any video/movie I play back on my notebook. This includes all physical video files or DVDs. Online flash videos (like YouTube) are unaffected.

Basically what happens is that the video is completely black, but the audio itself is perfectly fine. There is a "solution" to this issue, by opening up the ATi CCC panel, and disabling and then re-enabling the "Use application settings" checkbox under the Video tab. This re-enables the video portion, completely as if nothing had ever happened. However this must be done for every single video played launched no matter what application I use, until I reboot. After a reboot, as long as I don't touch the CCC panel, I don't get the blanked-out video.

I hope I explained that clearly. I'm sure somebody else has seen this issue before, and hopefully can enlighten me as to why this happens. Please note that this problem/solution occurs for all video players I've tried: Windows Media Player, Win Media Centre, VLC, BSPlayer, Cyberlink PowerDVD (bundled with my notebook), JetAudio, Winamp, Media Player Classic. I also tried different codec packs, to see if it wasn't an issue with the new Windows Media Foundation codecs (was just a guess).

My notebook's info is as in my signature:
    Dell Studio XPS 16
    i7-720qm
Ati MR HD 5730, version 10.8 drivers (direct install, not upgraded from 10.7)
    * am not using any overclocking software or tools, etc.

This has been an issue for me right from the get-go after I installed Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit (fresh install from MSDN DVD, not upgraded, nor from Dell).

Thanks for any help you can provide,

    daver

Sounds like it's pretty much a driver bug. Only thing to do is roll back to an older driver, or deal with it like you're doing.

thanks Pitabred. i''ll give that a try: uninstall the 10.8 drivers from ATI and install the 10.7 drivers from Dell.

for your ATI card, do you use the standard ATI drivers from http://ati.amd.com, or do you use HP's own drivers?

I use the Catalyst 10.8's from ATI. But I never open the CCC anyway, so I haven't noticed the issue. Why do you open it so often? There's pretty much never a reason to once you get things configured.

well when i hook up my XPS to my TV at home via HDMI, the overscan option is always set back to the default 15% or whatever it is (causing the 2-inch black border), no matter how many times i change it to 0% in the CCC.

as such, i need to disable/enable the video colour settings in CCC if i want to watch a DVD or otherwise video file over HDMI.

maybe switching to 10.7 will fix the overscan issue, and the blacked out video problem. i'm at work now but i'll give it a go when i get home tonight!

so i downgraded to 10.7, provided by Dell's support website. and well I'll be, it worked. video is always present no matter if i've opened the CCC panel or not. however, i noticed this "change" after downgrading to 10.7 from 10.8. The "Presets" tab in the "Video" was a give away that there was something wrong with my 10.8 install:

Under 10.8, I had a black box under the Video Preview title. I thought this was normal, as the "Use Application Settings" box is always checked by default. However, in 10.7, there is a sample image (woman, flowers, fruit) now displayed where there once was nothing but a black box. You can see this in the attached image below. I had to re-install 10.8 (and then 10.7 again) to take these screencaps. anyone else had this problem before?

Odd. Mine actually shows a flag preview, that I remember it used to play, but it doesn't now. Mine also doesn't say "Avivo video". I assume you've done a complete uninstall, deleted all the files in the c:\ATI directory, and then reinstalled?

yup, did the whole uninstall. i always have that damn annoying problem where the Catalyst Install Manager crashes, because I have the C++ 2008 SP1 package installed, not 2005. so instead i open up a prompt window and uninstall via the "atisetup.exe -uninstall" command. then i run the Driver Sweeper in both normal Windows and Safe Mode, and then delete the ATI directory (which stores all the installation files). after that I extract the ATI CCC files into "C:\ATI" and run the installation using the "atisetup.exe -install" command (again, problems with the annoying c++ crash).
