I just recieved my new E1505 today, and i'm thinking i'm going to reformat, and reinstall windows. I already have 78 processes running and i havn't done anything to it. So i took the advice of some people here, and used Norton Ghost to backup a copy of my hard drive, just incase i would screw something up when i was reformating. Well, i followed the guides, and i created a backup. Now, what i want to do is burn this to a DVD, so if something goes wrong, i can just boot from the DVD, and windows will be back. My question is...how do i do that? I have some program called Sonic DigitalMedia which i guess is a burner. Do i just add the files C_drive001.v2i and the file DF1PB4B1.sv2i and burn them to a normal DVD. Will this make it bootable and everything?

Does Norton have the capability to burn these files? They do not look like bootable files/images. If they aren't and you just burn them, you'll need Ghost installed to read the files.
-
i just found the files, and burned them with a different burning program. I didn't know if this is the right way or not...

bump.............

This doesn't answer your question but while on the topic of Norton Ghost. Did you use it to backup the Media Direct Partition too? I just ordered it and I want to occasionally back up my E1405 when I test out new versions of Vista.
-
You can burn an image of your hard drive onto DVD(s) with Ghost. Ghost automatically makes the 1st DVD bootable. That was one of the first things I did with my new notebook.
-
how do you get to that feature in ghost? i used a seperate program...but i have the feeling i did it wrong.
No, i dont think i backed up the media direct partition. I just ran it quick just incase anything went wrong when i reformat and reinstall windows... i'm still waiting on the disks tho. -
I use Ghost 2003. After selecting backup on the menu, it gives you the choice to backup to a file or to a CD or DVD (assuming you have a burner). It automatically makes the CD/DVD bootable for future recovery.

well..i just used the ghost it came with...i believe it was v10.0. I didn't see any options like that...does someone know?
-
I tried ver10 and hated it. It refused to recognize my other HD. I didn't play with it long enough to learn all it's ins-and-outs. Uninstalled it and went back to 2003. 2003 does definitely allow DVD backups.
-
so i need to somehow get norton ghost 2003...is that v. 9?
-
OK, i think i just figured out how to burn it (in norton) to a DVD. I just did it and it made a dvd with 1 file in it named C_Drive001.v2i. Is that right? is that all i need. It never asked me any questions about making it bootable. Ive read that you need 2 disks to restore this image. One with the files, and one like...standard ghost boot disk. Does anyone know?

that doesn't really help me...i used v 10..and that is for 2003.

I bought ver10 with 2003 in the same package, new, on Ebay for a very good price. Do a search at Ebay for "Norton Ghost".
-
Use Acronis TrueImage. It's better.
-
I didn't know about TrueImage. Checked their web site. Looks like a pretty good package. I checked EBay. Norton Ghost 2003 --- about $15-$20 with shipping. TrueImage ver9.0 about $40. It all depends on what you want. 2003 does the basic reliable backup and it's much cheaper than TrueImage if Andrew just wants a low priced alternative to Ghost ver9.0.
-
I used to run Ghost and it worked fine for a while, but then I decided to build a RAID array using my nVidia NForce controller. UH OH! Ghost wouldn't recognize it, even with a driver disk. That turned me off from Ghost for life. Trueimage didn't even need a driver disk. Recognized it right off the bat. When you buy Ghost on eBay for $15-$20 you're most likely getting a tech bench copy.
-
Unfortunately True Image seems to have a LOT of negative feedback out there, was searching and could find only a few posative comments and lots of "this doesn't work" comments, kinda made me not want to use it (however Ghost is bad for anything other than "standard" it starts struggling with USB, continues to struggle with NTFS and from then on just isn't good).

Tech bench copy? I don't know about that...but whatever, it works. I bought a Ghost ver9.0 and 2003 (two CDs) new, unopened with a manual on eBay for less than $20 including shipping. I said earlier I hated ver10. I meant ver9.0 (it's useless) . I've never tried ver10. 9.0 was flakey, but 2003 is fine. I do backups to my DVD and to my external USB NTFS Seagate 160G HDD from my NTFS "C" drive...no problems.
