I bought an OEM version of NIS 2003 for my r3000z. It is giving me a lot of problems. Right after I install the program, everything is OK. Then when I go through several rounds of LiveUpdate, the Norton antivirus part of it takes 3-5 min to load and the NIS part of it never loads. The NIS never logs in. Even when I log in myself, I am unable to turn on the NIS security. My wireless connection also became spotty after that.

Has anyone encountered this problem? I have been working with Symantec tech support for a week and am getting nowhere.

It is to the point that I want to restore my computer to factory settings. Has anyone used the recovery CD for this? Does it work well?

The NAV 2004 that came with the computer seems to work fine. Do I need a software firewall with XP HE? I use a wireless router at home with a hardware fiewall.

    Thanks,
    Bill

I don't use this program, so I can't offer any suggestions on it. But regarding the firewall, if you have a wireless router with hardware firewall, you don't need anything else. The h/w firewall should keep you protected fine.

The Recovery CD's should work fine, on my HP NX7000, I used the Restore CD's and I got my system back to the way it was when I first got it. I had XP Pro on my unit.

Just for "fun" you could use a free firewall like sygate.

It is not quite fun actually. I remember myself sitting in the office and chatting with co-workers and then I turn to my laptop to see the warning from my firewall:
Someone is scanning for open ports on your computer...
This is no fun to see that kind of message, fortunately, I was well protected against the attack.

Erp, could have been a scan performed from within the lan/office network. Like admins checking users or curious/malicious coworker.
