I'm planning on buying a laptop without a OS. I have a copy of MS XP Pro build 2002, is this version too old or is this not a big problem as long as the updates are in place and it's SP2.

I'm buying the Asus S96J so the option for NO OS is already there. THen they just install the hardware and include the driver CD.

Any retail XP CD will be fine, but if it doesn't already include SP2, you may want to download a copy of the full SP2 install from here and burn it to a CD so you can install it before getting on the web (SP2 includes some WiFi updates that you may need before XP will connect to a wireless network, which is why you want a 'local' copy).

You can configure a whole lot for cheap---->I'm also looking at geared2play.com and gentechpc.com

I'll have to download a lot of updates because its a Win XP Pro build 2002.

I have the Service Pack 2 already w/the WIN XP Pro version. So I shouldn't have any problems. I know there is a Service Pack 3 but is that really important?

The service packs are rollups of all the Windows Updates. So, if you apply the latest SP, there will be less to update via Windows Update. Personally, I always keep my systems up to date with all the latest SPs / updates.

Service Pack 3 is not due til next year. If you copy of Windows is valid I don't seen any issues.

Well , current Windows XP Builds are based on Build 2600 aka Version 2002. So you would need the service packs. I am using a lappie with no OS Pre-installed. Instead , I used my Windows XP Pro CD [from my old computer]. I would suggest you to get AutoPatcher XP , so you would have all the latest stuff installed. Its in one big package
