Ok this thread pertains to Nvidia stupidity in their new Windows 7 Driver release.
    Specifically 187.XX
I don't know about discrete cards but this issue is reproducible in Nvidia Integrated Graphics like 9100M G.
    Firstly 9100M G has 3 modes

    Default 169MHZ
    2D Mode 275MHZ
    3D Mode 450MHZ

However the new Nvidia Drivers 187.XX forces 2D Mode and 3D Mode in Windows 7 Aero Interface, which is completely stupid when the 186.XX drivers that toggle between Default and 2D Mode can handle Windows 7 Aero as well.
3D Mode should only be activated in GAMES not DESKTOP!

As a result the GPU experience higher temperature for no good reason.

    Work Around:
Download driver not affected by Nvidia Stupidity :186.91.
    Uninstall Nvidia Stupidity Driver 187.XX.
Use CCleaner to remove all traces of Nvidia Stupidity in Windows Registry (otherwise aero will not start)
    Install Driver Version 186.91.

You can download driver version 186.91 from laptopvideo2go.
It is the most updated driver without Nvidia stupidity.

Sorry if I sounded rude but because of this Nvidia wasted my time.

Acer new Windows 7 Drivers included 187.XX drivers.
    Laptopvideo2go as well.
To test if your laptop is subjected to the same problem using the 187.XX drivers run GPUZ in desktop.
If you see 3D Mode Frequency activated in Desktop Mode you have the same issue.
If you are still insistent on 187.XX drivers but still want the GPU to reset to default clocks simply disable Aero.

    Nvidia Drivers quality has dropped.

    Here.
Click on the model and choose driver and Windows 7 OS.
    The VGA driver will show.
    Or you can go laptopvideo2go.com.
This issue affects all new driver version from 187.XX onwards to 19X.XX.
When they first release the 19X.XX beta drivers I thought this problem will be fixed in subsequent release...but I was wrong...

With my 8400M GT the Powermizer comes into play always, even with DWM effects, so the window animations (open/minimize/maximize) are a bit jerky. I don't know what's is going on with your Nvidia cards. I am using 186.91 MS update driver.

Running 186.81 with no problems, had to use THIS to get Powermizer working correctly but that might just be an isolated issue on my machine. GPU downclocks to 169MHz in aero and stays nice and cool.
