Is there anyway to force PowerMizer work only in 2D mode?

Of course! Your not the first with issues with Nvidia PowerMizer. I was tired to see people trying to find hacks on the internet, not for their video card, and end up messing everything in their system. So I create a special tool for that (among other tweaks) which I call NvGPUPro ( www.nvgpupro.com). It should work on all Nvidia graphic cards. Please note that this software doesn;t need to run all the time, you just run it, set the settings close it, restart your computer to apply changes and voila all done. It doesn't hack of modify the drivers themselves.. it just plays with Nvidia drivers settings that are there, but somply not displayed in the Nvidia Control Panel.

See what people on this very forum has to say:

And yes it supports Windows 7 64-bit. I was supporting it since the public beta.

If I disable PowerMizer, my GPU runs at high 3D performance mode :(

Well that is the thing.. what you can do, is have it enabled when on battery, but disabled when plug-in. The second option in NvGPUPro allows you to do that. If you have a good laptop, the extra heat should be no problem. Sadly, I don't have your GPU to with the current driver if there is anything I can do.

You can PM me a segment of your registry, if you want, to see if there is anything I can change from there, but I would not get my hopes up (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video).

I could see in a way to lock the speed at certain PowerMizer level, but I don't know if it will go lower in speed, which means that your battery life will be a bit reduced.

GoodBytes would you have any idea how to make powermizer ignore dwm.exe? Apparently it likes to clock up when i do window activity like resizing a window (Which, when aero is enabled, controlled by dwm.exe)

This is unnessesary and it makes my cooler go up and down and i just want it to stay quiet, at 2D clocks while im not gaming

I wish I could without hacking the drivers, which is kinda goes against Nvidia Driver License Agreement, and fall into possible complication with the user system stability, which is something I am not willing to do. I try to keep my software as safe as possible, and trouble from Nvidia.

However, I am researching in a way to have an option to reduce the overall quality of Aero (dwm.exe), to reduce the power it needs to draw. This should in theory, reduce the changes that the GPU increase in speed for Aero. I am trying to implement this on the coming up version of the software, IF IT WORKS (remember that the goal of teh software is not to hack anything). However, this might take some times, due to university, new beta driver for laptop, other requested features, some improvement to the video card detection system and let's not forget testing. When out? I don't know. I try to not release crap but rather a quality software. :)

Hmm.. well you can scrap that idea... it seams that you can't do that. The only visual reduction is not rendering the glass stripes on the glass effect, but that didn't seams to help anything.

These are thing I can suggest for now.
    - Set Windows that when on power saver and on battery that transparency is turned off (default behavior, I believe)
    - Disable minimize/maximize/restore/open/close animation on window
    - Don't use Flip 3D (Win+Tab).

Doing the above showed the most impact on battery life, and reduction the chances of having the GPU kick up at full speed.

I recall Vista drivers for laptops where it was actually hard to kick the GPU at full speed, but since Win7, anything will do it, powermizer enabled or not. Hmm.. I guess all we can do is wait for the official 195 series drivers.

Well my battery life is horrible no matter what and when the CPU is in downclockded mode, my pc tend to freeze (yeah its great)..

its all about the noise.. i guess i could just use basic or classic theme but thats just plain lol.. its funny because with 185.68 (dox) these clocking issues were not there.

and yeah i have all anims disabled, i rarely use flip3d ect

Well disabling Aero (going to Aero Basic or Classic) means that the CPU will take up the task in rendering.. so that means that the CPU will increase in temperature, and loose some level of performance especially that CPU's are not designed for drawing.

i don't know your laptop per say, but I would suggest to change your battery for a higher capacity (and/or it's maybe time to replace it), get a can of compressed air and use it to clean in side of the laptop, heatsink and fan. If you fan is louder then when you purchase it, it's maybe time to lubricate the fan motor.

Well its not THAT bad.. Its just a tiny bit. Thanks for the tips though mate.. and yeah, i have been considering a new battery, but when i cant use power saving states, its a bit annoying :\
