Not sure if this is a well known fact or not, but you can have Word 2007 save it's files in the normal .doc format.

    1. Click on the Office button (top left-hand corner)
    2. Click on Word Options
    3. Click on Save---------> "Save files in this format: Word 97-2003(*.doc)

    Done.

This applies to PowerPoint et al.

Too many times I have sent files to my Professors only to have them tell me they couldn't open them. The .doc format is still the standard by far so I just change all my Office applications to save in Office 97-2003 formats by default.

Hope this is helpful to some. :)

I think he means that by going to the options button on the bottom of the screen and then to save, you can have word save in the .doc format by default without using save as option each time.

edit: I made this post in reference to a response that has been deleted.

Tell your professors to download and install the free converters for Office 2000/2003/2004 from Microsoft. Surely it is more preferable for them to be extending the capabilities of their software.
