Dell M1210 in signature. Is this enough machine to keep these two softwares from killing the speed on the computer? I already have another computer with Office Developer XP with Windows XP Pro running too slow trying not to have the same thing occur.![]()

Your M1210 has enough power to run both abovementioned software..Especially with the most powerful merom around the T7600 with 2GB ram. Speed should not be an issue while running both at the same time.

I read somewhere that it had been a problem but that makes me feel a lot better. So outlook should not slow it into oblivion? My XP problem is a big problem but I am replacing that with Office 2003. It seems like the indexing is a big problem.

LapQuest, please don't crosspost. You should pick one board to post your question in, instead of posting the same question in this board and the Dell board.

You people crack me up sometimes. There are people running Centrino laptops with Vista and Office 2007. I myself have Vista Business on a LV 2500Core Duo (1.83Ghz) with 1GB RAM and it is just fine. Yes that is a low voltage Core Duo, not a Core2Duo. It works - seamlessly.
Install or the Office 2007 - or dont. Your hardware is not a barrier in any way. -
Sorry about the cross thread. I was not getting anyone in Dell forum. Now it has gotten responses. I apologize. The reason I was asking yes it is a fast machine but if any one can have a problem I would be the one. So I was trying to make sure. Since it looks like my other software may not work I am glad I asked. I will not post twice again but I had not gotten any answers so I thought maybe it needed to be moved here.
Which is the best place to keep it?

I had to uninstall Office 2007, because it froze my computer whenever it got e-mail. Totally sux. I just uninstalled that part of Office 2007 and reinstalled Outlook 2003 and now everything works fine, except that PowerPoint 2007 is a POS.

Where to keep it? It doesn't matter - just pick one and post a link to the other one. You could ask a moderator to merge the two threads together (that's their job).

I was afraid that what I had heard about outlook was true. I was reading that outlook was really heavy on system resources. I was thinking about Office 2003 myself. My biggest needs are outlook word and excel. I think my computer taking too long to boot up and be usable is a big problem. My dad is like Skagen if it works who cares if it is slow. But I like my machine in a usable state quick.
This is very enlightening. I did not use XP until SP1 and was very happy I did. But since I had the OS I was considering the move. I need to try to help a friend who can't get her homework turned in with Works and Vista on an HP desktop.

Could a moderator merge this thread with this one? http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=1886168&posted=1#post1886168

I asked Kegobeer I am not sure I did it right but I asked the other thread be merged with this one. It seems more appropriate here.

Only other possibility is that you installed all the junk components in the Office Suite by default. Use the selective install and think carefully about what you are installing. For example, ditch "Groove" - all it does is sit in your auto-startup and you wont ever use it. Do you need MS Access? Info Path? FrontPage? Even Powerpoint - hell ask yourself if you need the program - or just the viewer to see presentations that are sent to you.
And within each program, what are you chosing to install? Do you need a million "templates" you will never use? Should you be installing the Spanish and French spell-check, when you cant even understand someone from Birmingham, let alone Bogota?
You get the idea...if Vista is going to "pre-fecth" Office 2007 Suite for you, hope you are not asking it to pre-fetch and load a whole building's worth of pipes and wires trailing behind too. -
I will try doing the selective install. Last time though I missed some pieces and that was what ended my fast booting computer. But I will give it a shot I am also going to try to install it on a new drive so I can remove it quickly if needed.

If you're talking about installing office on an external drive, there's your problem. Anything installed on an external hard drive is going to run significantly slower than if it's on your primary hard drive. I imagine office 200-anything would significantly slow your boot and run times if it sat on an external drive.

(1) with your system office 2007 should be super snappy - I just moved from a Pentium M 1.6 with 1GB or RAM to C2D 2.0 with 1 GB RAM and Vista and its massively faster.
(2) don't install office on a secondary HDD - it'll be dog slow! -
After working on another machine today installing Vista Ultra it seems pretty sweet. No it will not be on an external drive. I think I am about ready to take the jump. But the one I have been working on today has got a few bugs with drivers. It just seems some are not available. That and my two choices for firewall are not compatible yet. The office thing though seems like maybe those problems must have been worked out. I have been setting up a multimedia machine for my brother today and the only thing it does not have on it is Office 2007. It is very smooth and faster than i expected. I may give the boot to XP and give Vista a try. But it is somewhat different things all seem to be there just in different places. Other things just work different. What kind of learning curve after you jump into it is there? Is it Pretty fast? Networking will be my downfall for sure.

As for Vista, well, expect to use Google.I've have Vista for a few days now, and there have been moments (with networking) where I've needed to hit google to get help. That said, it's spotlight equivalent is great and the gadget system shows promise.

I am really starting to hate and like Vista all at the same time. I am having major problems trying to build a computer with it. Every time I turn around there is another driver conflict that causes problems. On My M1210 though I think it may be straight forward. The problem there is software that I have money invested in not working. But I may just go ahead and take the dive. It seems pretty nice but the Ultra or whatever is called is not that much more than the other packages. I just wish once MS would release one with drivers ready and software ready.
