An approximate release date for Windows 7 is outlined in a letter

Bill Gates may have only just said his goodbyes, but the Microsoft machine keeps on running with the company announcing information about the release of Windows 7.

The paint may not have even dried on the Windows that is Vista, but it seems that Microsoft is already looking to launch its successor within the next two years.

In a letter to enterprise and business customers on Tuesday, vice president of Microsoft Bill Veghte announced that the approximate launch date for Windows 7 is January 2010.

    Seventh heaven

In the letter, Veghte wrote: "Our plan is to deliver Windows 7 approximately three years after the January 2007 general availability launch date of Windows Vista.

"You've also let us know you don't want to face the kinds of incompatibility challenges with the next version of Windows you might have experienced early with Windows Vista.

"Our goal is to ensure that the migration process from Windows Vista to Windows 7 is straightforward."

Well, if Intel is anything to go by, it won't be the migration from Vista to Windows 7 that will be the problem, it will be the migration from XP to Windows 7 that most computer users will be worried about.

I still think W7 will show up in 2011, regardless of Gates and Co say. The good news is that Microsoft does want to move on wrt Vista. Too much bad press for the shiny OS. :p

I'm fine with whenever they choose to come out with the new OS. Vista and XP both continue to be good to me, and I'll use them both for as long as I need to.

Well, I for one aren't too hyped over Windows 7. From the screenshots out of it so far, it looks exactly like Vista. Even if they do make it look different, it looks like Microsoft is putting a lot of time and effort into handwriting and speech recognition... as if we're all gonna replace our regular $350 24" LCDs w/ ones that have touch-screen support....

The way things are now, Microsoft is setting themselves up for an even bigger failure than Vista ever was.

Vista looked like XP until Beta 2. The UI is the last thing they do. 7 is based on the same base as Vista so for compatibility, it's like 2000->XP. XP->7 will be as messed up as XP->Vista.

Okay, so it should be available in 2012.

I still don't see much in Vista that makes it eminently more usable than XP was. Is there anything on tap for Windows 7?

This time around I want to participate in the betas if possible. The release date seems soon, hopefully they haven't cut out WinFS again.

Windows 7 is going to Vista sp2---it's not a whole OS, hence why it will be easy to get out by 2010

How does one go about becoming a part of the beta process? I would certainly be interested in participating as well.

I am not entirely sure. I remember hearing bits about it with Vista but I kind of ignored it since I was not interested. Hopefully once they start releasing the betas we will hear more.

If it was vista sp2 they would call it vista sp2 and you woud get it form a download. This is a new OS. That means you will install it froma new cd, it will look different, and it will have new features.

Service packs are used to fix bugs and issues I don't see how windows 7 is anything like a service pack.

Uh,.. Were they under the impression when releasing Vista that we did want to have those issues?? I'm glad they understand now that stuff not working right is unappealing :D .
