Alright, I just formated and reinstalled vista, avira, and google chrome.

all my drivers are updated ect.

Now last time i use using this computer(the reason i had to format :( ) was becuase I had a whole bunch of corrupt files.

Now most of the files were from me modding and those for some reason tend to corrupt more, but i aslo had some regular old files go corrupt.

I would like to avoid this at all costs this time becuase for some stupid reason ChkDsk wont work on my computer no matter what.

In the past i have saved all my data and programs to the C: partion where vista is. It got to the point where the first partion was full. I have heard that this is not good for the HD and can lead to corrupt files.

How do I install and save data to my other 3 partions? The first one is the only one that has folders like

"Program Files" and "Users" ect ect.
Do i just make folders like this on other partions? and will the uninstall option still show these programs?

Also 1 of my partions say Vista C:

the other 1 says DATA E:
and the last 2 say Local Disk D: and F:
what is the difference between DATA and Local Disk

    Thank you in advanced.

PS- I like google chrome better than FF, its faster

I have a fairly simple question. Just why do you think you need 4 partitions? You probably screwed up the files yourself. Keep It Simple Stupid (the KISS principal) is a good one to live by.

I have 5 partitions, and things have never been better. And I have my program files on a different partition than the one with OS on it too!

But what's the point of multiple partitions? I have one on my laptop and one on my external. Splitting a hard drive up doesn't speed anything up, it doesn't make it easier to find things, it doesn't enhance security, it doesn't make sense...That's what I mean by K.I.S.S.

It does help in speeding things up, though with the processors and the what nots that we have today, it is barely noticeable.

Also, if your OS is corrupt and you have to format and re-install again, there goes your data (in case of single partition drives).

Also, it does help in making it easier to find things. I have one partition for my OS, one for songs, one for program files, one for movies and TV serials, and one for setups and my pornographic collection.

I have three. #1 has OS and all programs. #2 has ALL my data including Outlook PST files and IE Favorites. #3 has a ghost image of #1.

I am a developer and cannot afford ANY downtime, so whenever I want to try out some new piece of software I image #1 to #3, knowing if anything goes wrong I can recover #1 in a few minutes and not worry about the effects on #2.

#2 is periodically synced to my desktop machine and a folder on my server where it is backed up to tape every night.

I really doubt it speeds things up, but ScuderiaConchiglia seems to have a legit use for multiple partitions. I just keep an image of my laptop on my 1Tb external. As for you, Silas Awaketh, what do you think folders are for? And the OP probably doesn't need partitions either. Leastwise if he expects to have a stable and usable system before he gets over the learning curve of how to handle them.

And if you use that image on your 1TB external to restore your laptop, you overwrite all of your documents. I have set up at least thirty machines for other folks and every single one of them has been with a separate partition for the "My Documents" folder, Outlook PST and IE Favorites. In my mind this is even more of a necessity for inexperienced users.

Folders, for me, and I suppose for every one else as well, serve the purpose of keeping files of the same, let's say, characteristics, together.

For example, I have a folder named The Sopranos. Inside it, there are six more folders, named Season 1-Season 6. All the 86 episodes for the series The Sopranos are neatly named, and put in their respective season's folder. Similarly, I have one named Pornographic Material, inside which are around 80 more folders, and each contains files with common characteristics in it.

Same goes for my movies folder, my setups folder, my songs folder, my downloads folder, my documents folder, my games folder (do you see where I'm getting at here?), my program files and program files (x86) folder and so forth, and I don't think it is wise to keep them all in one partition, and if something happens, watch everything fall apart.

Take it this way, your home, do you have just one huge room, and everyone lives in there? Or your almira, is it one huge box? :)

Also, I didn't know which one to pick, so brought the whole lot here.
