Ok, i'll give you one more "alternative" :)

    Here's the third "alternative"

Use Foxit Reader instead of Adobe as your pdf reader!

    Pros:
    - Smaller filesize (Adobe 22mb, Foxit 2mb)
    - use less RAM
    - opens INSTANTLY! Adober takes several seconds to open, loading dll's. Foxit opens in 1-2 seconds

    Download Foxit

I don't really care about the size/speed difference (later versions of Adobe have improved quite a bit there as well, to the point where it's worth using again)

But Foxit wins in a few other areas. It allows you to write comments and annotations in a PDF (brilliant for proofreading your college report), and in a lot of ways it's just nicer to use (Wtf is up with Adobe's default hand cursor zooming in on the page? I just want to drag the page to scroll down, I don't want the page to zoom in and take up the whole page)

So yeah, Foxit ftw. But not because of the size or speed. Those are just added bonuses.

Check the Vista optimization guide in my signature, third post or so, on how to streamline Adobe Reader such that it performs as fast as FoxIt, and you still use its features (mainly, opening PDFs in Firefox tabs, for me).

Another interesting topic. Perhaps I will replace my Adobe reader with this one.

Is there an "alternative" topic for 7zip instead of winRAR?

I haven't seen one, but I posted some comparisons between those two a while ago. (And yeah, 7zip kicks ass)

I'm already using it, but I'm considering going back to Adobe because Foxit won't open in tabs in Opera (or at least it doesn't by default). Is there any way to get it to do this?

I don't think there's such plugin for Opera, it's a shame, because that's the only negative thing about Foxit

Huh, I'd say it's about its strongest selling point. It opens your pdf'es in a dedicated window, instead of this in-browser crap that's slow and crashes about 15% of the time...

could not duplicate or have i ever experienced this issue. Currently with FF2.0.0.10 and Minefield - xp and vista. With and w/o PDF download extension. Inside and outside the browser, my preference setting is currently outside the box since i can save and manipulate the pdf a bit more should i choose so.

    cheers ...

Opening a .pdf file never crashes my IE7. It does slow it down for a few seconds while the file loads but it's never crashed in the year+ that I've owned this computer.

foxit does have an update for pdf plugin, could this be the culprit on some crashes when opeing pdf within firefox? the size is definitively smaller than the normal foxit reader exe. just a wild shot, never had the problem without the plugin, so.

    cheers ...

An alternative worth looking into is ZipGenuis which I feel is superior to both WinRAR and 7zip. Its definitely worth checking out.

When I tried to use Foxit Reader it froze up too much when I tried to open PDFs. :( I decided to go back to Adobe. However I am using the old version 7.

I didn't say it crashed often. I've encountered it on every browser though. But mostly, it's just needlessly slow, and cluttered and hard to use. I want my pdf's in a separate window so I can read them in parallel with browsing.

This Foxit is damn fast, low of memory, scrolling is so smooth unlike adobe...

Now my default pdf reader is foxit
