Hey, I have a Sony Vaio laptop (VGN-FE770G) and I just ordered a new 750GB hard drive for it. I don’t have the original factory restore disks and was thinking about trying out windows 7. This laptop was bought in 2006 and came with Windows XP MCE 2005 and on also on the box it said "VISTA READY". When I go to the Sony website where I can download drivers it lets me choose between XP MCE and vista for a list of drivers.

I'm wondering if I will have any compatibility issues with drivers and windows 7, considering this computer is ~5 years old. Should I use the XP or vista Drivers? Note: a lot of the vista drivers I don't recognize, for a computer having the same hardware, seems like there shouldn't be so many different drivers???

Been debating windows 7 for a while... and still not sure if I want to use it on this older computer because even though my hardware qualifies to use 7 (minus aero theme) I've heard on older computers it can significantly slow it down. Anyways.. I'd still like to know if its a realistic option as far as the drivers are concerned. Thanks.

If the native Win 7 drivers do not work, I would recommend using VISTA drivers if you try to install 7 on it. How much RAM do you have and what do you use it for now? From what I have read 4 GIG ram is sufficient for web surfing, email, and light multi-tasking.

Also if you use this phrase in BING.com it will search the SONY forum here and my give some more help

Put WIN 7 on an older computer my daughter used for college - bought about the same time frame with XP and Vista ready sticker. Use the Vista drivers, it will work fine (verify between 32/64 bit) and will even find a few of them automatically in WIN 7. Check out the clean install instructions on Sony's site for your model for order of drivers (ensures your various function buttons work properly). Link to Sony site for Vista install (will work same for Win 7):

Thank you. I think I'll give 7 a shot. I guess I will try the vista dirvers then.
