Omega Driver questions

I am looking to over clock my GPU just a little, it is my first time doing any over clocking but other then that I'd say i know my way around the computer. I tried installing the Omega Drivers last night and I ran the aquamark to check it out and my score got slightly worse. Also, I was wondering how do you actully over clock? Is there a seperate program that dose that? Also I did see someone else in another post had this problem I tried to install the catylist drivers from ATI it gave me some odd error about not having the proper componets installed. When I looked on the ATI site it says how they don't support notebooks and to get the drivers from my manufacture....I believe my GPU being a Radeon 9600 128MB runs a 310MHz? I'd like to get it up tp 350MHz thats the only chnage between it and the 9600Pro right?

You will definitely want to upgrade your cooling if you want to expect any decent results. My signature shows my results after overclocking. I used to get bout 21588 aquamarks and 2900 3dmarks. my radeon 9600 pro runs at 337/242mhz. With omega drivers on and no overclocking, my score lowered as well. However, games actually played better, and that's what matters. You can overclock VERY easily with Radlinker, a program included with the omega drivers. Go to the catalyst control panel, and there is a tab dedicated to this. If you want to know how to easily upgrade your GPU cooling, check the modding section.

without even using any extra cooling I have used mine at 385 / 240 MHz, i just don't leave it at this full time. I only do it when I need best performance in games. For normal usage, i.e. internet, typing, RTS games I leave it at default and only clock it up for the higher end stuff.

dose the GPU still slow its self down if it gets to hot? I know it has some sort of heat protection but is that disabled for it to be over clocked?

i don't know, i haven't had a problem with heat though.

It doesn't slow itself down. You will see it stutter a lot, then artifact, and the crash. Crashing is not fun[ ] . It should be right at the level where it is safe from heat by default, but you never know. I tried turning off my GPU fan, and the temp kept going up, and up, and up. If a fan broke, the GPU probably would too. You are only really taking a risk if you overclock. Even if the GPU does melt (HIGHLY unlikely) you can claim you were using it properly and it would be covered under warranty.

It also, depends somewhat on luck about how much you can overclock. Even given identical components, it all depends on your memory modules as to your exact overclocking potential.
