I'm currently using Evga precision to OC/monitor my GPU temps in game with its on screen display, but is there anything similar for the CPU? I don't want it to display all cores, just the highest one. Currently using coretemp but that shows temps in the taskbar. Any ideas of software that can show it in game?

I don't know any way to have it displayed on screen. But there's always having temps displayed on the Logitech G15's LED if you were looking for a keyboard.

dont have a g15
any clues for an on screen display?
-
if you have vista or win 7 there are lots of sidebar apps that show it
-
and why do you want/need real-time on-screen temp listings?

I use Nvidia System tools, currently 6.06. Maybe it's what your looking for. It installs 3 packages, you have the option of choosing which ones. I believe the options are System monitor, Performance, and Update. You're looking for System Monitor, but I let it install all 3. here's the link

well i wanted to know how high cpu intensive games/apps get my temps to. Can't really know unless i tab out mid game and check.
-
just use a program that logs cpu and gpu temps to file so you can view after

Rivatuner with the RealTemp plugin might work. Used it on my previous PC, but don't remember if it allows you to just show one core.
-
so something like a widget, sidebar app, or any kind of program you have to go start and look at is out?

+1 for Rivatuner, you gotta download the cpu temp plugin with it, I have no experience with quad cores but i don't think you can display the core with highest temp though, you can choose which core to display on screen.

For in-game display I don't know, but like others have said, use one that logs the temps and you can check later.
I use HWiNFO32. It doesn't install itself. You can put the temps in your taskbar, and set alarms. You can customize the background color, and you can pick what you want displayed (not the highest core though): cpu, gpu, hdd, etc.
After a game you can just double click on them and it will give you the max, min, and current. I have it on 24/7 because it uses little resources.
First 4 are CPU cores, last 2 are GPU diodes.
