I have a HP Laptop. I don't know the exact model number but it has the following configuration :- Intel Core-i5 4210u 1.7Ghz Processor, Nvidia 820M GPU and 4GB RAM. It came preinstalled with Windows 8.1

Now this is my problem :-

Whenever I power-up the laptop by using the power-button, I get the Windows 8 logo and than instead of the login-screen it gives me a black screen. Its not even a black screen, the display is exactly as it is when the laptop turned off(nothing at all on the screen). But I know that the laptop is running because the power button and caps-lock key is illuminated. Now I discovered that in order to get to the Login Screen, I have to manually close the lid and open it. This however does not work everytime. How can I fix it.

Please someone help me. It is a new laptop and I can't return it because I bought t from a different country.

The first thing I would try is booting up and pressing the internal/external monitor key. It's usually Fn+F8 key on boot up. You can also try going into "safe mode" before it boots to see if it's a drivers issue.

Lastly it wouldn't hurt going into the BIOS and doing a load default reset. :hi2:

something could have worked lose during transit as we all know how these courier drivers treat boxes.

could be a lose ribbon cable as you mention closing and opening the lid sometimes works.
only other thing that normally works lose is the ram sticks.

and here lies the lesson, buying from a different country isnt always the best option.

where do you live and where did you buy from?

i would also contact HP support

Maybe it's a driver issue with sleeping the display?

could be but all laptops should have gone through their burn in test so should work out the box.
