The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

One of the weirdest things I have ever experienced on a PC:

    3 separate issues:

    1) Out of nowhere, Firefox is allowing all sorts of pop ups and other windows with advertisements to open. My pop up blocker is on and yet it happens now ALL THE TIME.
    2) This one is super weird-out of nowhere I will hear random people talking, with music or advertisements in the background. AND THERE SEEMS TO BE NO SOURCE FOR THE SOUNDS! What I mean is I will have this forum open (for example)and nothing else and I will hear these random sounds! I try to search in the windows for the source but I cant find it. Its downright freaky...
    3) Lastly-EVERY page I go to has the same advertisement (or some variation of it)! I feel like Big Brother is watching me.

Symantec did catch a virus but quarantined it last week around the time this all started happening. Im thinking I have some nasty ad/spyware bug.

    Any ideas?

At the top of the Security forum, there are two stickies for some general adware detection and removal programs. Try those first. Also, try ad-aware and spybot.

Can you try using internet explorer to browse the web and see if the problem still exist?

Last I heard Spybot was still updating but you may be better off with Malwarebytes Antimalware and SuperAntiSpyware.

I downloaded both SuperAS and Malwarebytes.

When I tried to get the latest definitions from SAS, it said my firewall wasnt allowing access to the internet.

    How should I combat this?

Works fine for me. Whatever malware you have is probably blocking access to their site.

Thats nuts, and what I thought too. No coincidence here that I couldnt download either Spybot or SAS directly from their sites.

Try downloading from another computer, and then installing while in safe mode.

also run smitfraudfix and use it to reset the browser and scan the drive and page file. norton may flag it but i assure you it is not malware. excellent program, also make sure the one you download is free if not its prob a fake version
