Is there a safe site that I can store my favorites or bookmarks? Even if I have to upload it periodically, doesn't have to be real time. Just would be nice if I go from one PC to another or if I'm away from home, to just logon to a site and use all my favorites?

    Thanks.

i use xmarks. are they save? dunno, i trust them blindly. but you could set up xmarks to go to some own server (and i could do so, towards my home server actually). so i guess they don't do something evil..

oh, and it's fully automatic, integrates well into firefox (i just disable their additional features, just backing up bookmarks and logins (yes! me saving logins into the cloud!! :)))

should even work in ie, i think they made a plugin for it.

The Google Toolbar can do that too, I believe.

delicio.us does exactly that, and was the original pioneer in that area. They've since strayed away from their roots (now it's more of a facebook meets favorites) but still works well for managing your own bookmarks online.

ie7pro allows bookmark sync across multiple computers on IE 7 or IE 8.

Will any of these allow import from my existing bookmarks, or do I have to do them all myself? I guess if I had to do it manually it would force me to clean them up first, and it would be a one time thing.

The Favorites folder and its underlying individual files (websites/urls) are essentially like any other folder and underlying files, so you should, theoretically, be able to upload the Favorites folder to any on-line storage site.

Another way to save Favorites would be to transfer the whole folder to a memory stick -- and in that way you can not only save, but travel with them to other computers. I always have my Favorites backed up on memory sticks - if for no other reason that I have so many favorites, that just the thought of losing them (say, in a HDD crash, which has happend to me a couple of times), that the thought of having to collect them all again is too overwhelming!

Define "safe", or at least be aware that most services require you to let them analyze/process/do whatever with the data you provide (check the ToS/privacy policies).

If you want to be sure your stuff stays private, use a service which en-/decrypts your data locally on your computer (like Mozilla's Weave if you use Firefox), lets you use your own server (assuming you have one), or do it manually like Imperfect1 described.

Actually, I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but use my Windows Home Server to host them. I don't have a web server set up there yet, but that shouldn't be too hard.

xmarks just uploads them to the server, so no need to clean up (but it would be useful yes :))

I used to use the plugin "foxmarks"
I just went to the page and it's now "xmarks"
So today I would probably go with that :p

Opera syncs bookmarks 'out of the box' without any plugins, etc. Opera Sync works across all of the platforms that Opera runs on; Windows, Linux, and Mobile.

Via the mozilla dev newsgroups, foxmarks is one of those very useful, but badly-behaving firefox extensions.

I use Xmarks, it is great because it syncs my passwords and bookmarks. I also use Chrome's bookmark sync sinc I use Chrome.

Yup. It's called Opera Link, and it works entirely automatically, syncing bookmarks invisibly from the user. My T500's Opera install has the exact same bookmarks, notes, and speed dial sites as my Opera Portable on my USB drive, my Opera install on my torrenting computer, and my downstairs HTPC.

I think I will try using my own WHS and one of these nifty utilities:

    Simple Bookmark (free)
    http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Best/simple_bookmark.html

    Favorites to HTML (free)
    http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Favorites-to-HTML-Download-76076.html

    and Bookmarks Webmaker ($29.95):
    http://www.asensoft.com/bookmarks.shtml

The free ones are pretty bare bones but gets the job done. The other one has some configuration options, but not worth $29.95. Maybe $10 max. I'll look for others. Just a matter of converting and saving to WHS periodically.

the BYOS (bring your own server) version of xmarks should fit nicely. you'd need the webdav addon on the whs, and then you should be ready to go.

Sweet! Thanks davepermen +1. I'll give it a shot. But will probably start with a basic HTML dump first since it's straightforward and easy, but will tinker with this xmarks BYOS approach.
