in vista there were 3 power plans drawn up when u clicked on the battery icon.

but W7..u have to open the entire power options window and change manually.

is there a way to add more power options in the battery meter menu?

i wanna have something called as 'Balanced' where it dynamically changes processor speed.

also...how can i create a 'Balanced' power option present by default in Vista on W7?

i couldnt figure out in advanced power options.

on the left simply create a new power plan then select show additional plans to see them all and then you can make the new one you make the default one

There still is Three, only two are shown when you click the icon.

Click the battery icon on the taskbar, then click "More Power Options"

Then click the arrow poiting down for "Show Additional Plans" then now you have three!

I don't know how these things go unoticed, a little looking around and voila! you've found it lol

He knows that, but its a slow way to change power plans...

it's not a pointless change. any other options besides those two are pointless for nearly all it's customer base. removing them removes the possibilities for users to chose them for wrong reasons (performance mode got chosen very often, believing it gives you speed, while it actually just produces more heat and eats battery life).

in most cases, if there is an issue with a power plan, one can fix this in the plan. without needing to chose from more than two.

and yes, it would be nice to provide options. but microsoft has learned (the hard way) that providing options is a bad idea for most users. they just mess them up.

It's so sad that the idiots have to ruin it for the people who just have a small sense on what they are doing. But yes the program zfactor mentioned should do it..

Also let me add that running in performance mode, isnt really a big deal.. i do it, and i dont notice any battery difference when in balanced.. Its all about the screen brightness.. Its only when the CPU actually gets used that it will produce heat and lower battery life.

screen brightness is nothing powerplan related (but they have different defaults).

in my case, the power plan let my cpu go down from 1.86ghz to 800mhz. but not in "performance", where it always stays at 1.86ghz. that consumes more power, battery is down more quickly.

question is, why do you run in performance mode, at all.. it's just disabling all optimisations that exist, resulting in a worse system experience than without it, in the end.

the only reason i can accept is if something is buggy in the balanced mode, and even then, that buggy behaviour should get fixed, not "switching the mode".

i hope for "performance mode" to get dropped completely in the future.

I run in performance mode because my cpu is weird and the downclocking (speedstep i guess) may freeze it.. So i have software to make sure the multiplier stays at max all the time..

Although when on battery i have made it downclock to 1600 mhz, and stay there but to my experience that doesnt make the battery life longer at all

    Err, i know.

so it's mainly for bugfixing. for that, you could modify the default powreplan, too..

i'm actually unsure if power plans really have some thing that is not configurable in them anymore (they did before).

Whats the big difference between balanced and performance other that the CPU clock settings
