    I followed this guide.

When I put the theme in the themes folder, only some themes will open up and show when I double click on the shell, otherwise the theme does not show up.

Is there a reason for this?

I did something similar, but I used Vistatglazz to patch the UXtheme file. However I have not been able to get any new themes to work, so I'm curious also.

Are you running SP1? Some Visual styles only work in Original Vista (NO SP) while some only work in Vista Sp1

Yes, I am. I didn't know only some work with SP1.

When I download themes, how do I know which ones work with SP1? Or do I play the guessing game? :D

When unzipping the theme check if it has a "en-US" folder, if it doesn't then it probably won't work.

    hi

don't use Vistatglazz to patch the UXtheme file.

its better you download and install tuneup utilities 2008. it has t uneup styler
so you can go to tuneup styler and locate your downloaded themes n click on apply, it works like a charm, no need to patch UXtheme.

its fast n easy, when you want to remove tuneup utilities you can uninstall it. its easy, so the system file UXtheme is untouched and your default theme will be restored.

    :) :)

Definatley +1 for Tunup Utilities. I tried installing themes manually, patching the files in the system32 folder and created a whole manner of issues for myself. Tuneup Utilities does it all for you, just point the program to where the theme is and away you go. It also has a load of other usefull stuff including a file shredder, file recovery tool, diskcleanup etc etc, the list goes on. You can get a 30 day full usage trial. After that you have to pay but I definatley reckon this is a program that is worth paying for.
