I'm trying to separate part of a video file I have into a different file for conversion to my mobile phone, however I have no idea how it's done (same way some of the raw videos floating around take the opening of an episode and convert it into a separate file for viewing).
I'm sure there's opensource software available for this kind of task, I just don't know what to look for or where it's located. It would be nice to get a few pointers on where to start.

As you did not mention which operating system you are using, but did specifically ask for open source, I will suggest Handbreak, which is not only open-source, but also multi-platform.
The website offers extensive documentation, as well as an active community - both forums and a dedicated IRC channel are available.
Good luck -
Sorry, should have mentioned I'm using Vista x32.
I assume video transcoding lets you extract certain parts of an existing video file for creation of a different file? -
You might want to look into Avidemux.
That said, none of these programs will decrypt DVDs or any encrypted content, and discussion of how to do that is against the forum rules. So your success depends on what your source material is. -
Reply's a little late, but I got I wanted eventually despite the program triggering the DEP features.
Took 3 different conversions before my phone finally accepted what I wanted it to play. Thanks for the help.
