(Major release, so I decided to create a new thread - incremental updates here)
Opera 10.50 has officially been released, with a ton of new features and further speed enhancements, including:
- Private browsing mode
- Opera Presto 2.5, Carakan and Vega rendering engines
- A new JavaScript engine 7x faster than Opera 10.10's
- An Aero-glass theme like IE8's, for Windows 7 integration
- Removal of the menu bar
- Windows 7 jumplist support
- Opera Widgets now run as desktop processes, so Opera does not have to be open for widgets to run
- And a lot more.
Get it now at http://www.opera.com/download

yeah finally. I skipped the alpha and beta because I also use Opera mail and did not want to move those mails around.
And finally I can use this godlike version
And this version is blazingly fast. I tested a few sites I noticed slowdowns with Opera 10.1 in the past (like Farnell.com) and have to say:
Well done, Opera! Everything fixed and fast as hell.
Overall it became much faster, not only regarding JS. -
After 10 mins, not having the menu bar (by default) is a bit disconcerting, but it's beginning to grow on me.
-
So I downloaded Chrome yesterday and I just got Opera now.
It's weird that it remembers what I had on Speed Dial...how exactly does Opera do that? I told it to remove/uninstall EVERYTHING yet when it opened it up it opened up 2 pages.
1) Notebook Review (which was the very last page I was looking at on 10.1 before I uninstalled it)
2) Speed Dial
Does Opera like save some type of hidden folder on the comp even when it's removed? -
-
-
It's quite fast, but then again I did remove the AppData folders to eliminate 10.1 and beta residue. I like the more polished hide-away menu and Win7 integration
Because many websites cater to IE + Firefox exclusively, the entire web displays well correctly only after a major release. In between, it seems that pages gradually break as more IE catering hacks are used. (ex. NYTimes articles, this forum, Facebook, etc). Opera has to get to at least a 10% userbase before this problem goes away/
-
Don't forget Opera Link too, it's an on-line service (of Opera) that remembers your bookmarks and speed dial settings.
-
tried it. Much improved and cleaned up, GUI more intuitive once you locate big O in upper left and better privacy with tab and window, still a bit buggy with something running in the background but good for videos with turbo. New aero motiff modernizes and helps apearance greatly. Still #3 to FF and ie8 for me.
-
Although I do think this was kind of rushed (5 release candidates over the course of 2 days), I do really like this version.
-
Been using Opera 10.10, while it does take a lot more system resources it doesn't take that much more than other browsers, and I love some of the features.
I tried doing Check for Updates but it didn't pick anything up.. -
I think it's worth noting that the menu bar can be re-enabled, and the tabs can be de-integrated from the title bar. I'd intentionally been sticking with 10.10 until I discovered this; I happen to like my menu bars and dedicated title bars, so when I upgrade, I'll be re-enabling that (yes, I'm actually still on 10.10).
I am a bit disappointed with this forum in that its new style (new being relative) doesn't scroll horizontally properly with Opera. But at least the old style (still an option) works fine. And the times when I actually have to use IE for something are very rare. -
I just switched from Firefox 3.7 last night, and Opera is freaking awesome. I don't know why it's such an underrepresented browser.
A few things I miss from Firefox:
-AutoPager: automatically loads the next page in forum threads/comments/etc on sites like NBR or digg.
-Two click YouTube video downloads
-Fully functional automatic adblocking
Anyone know how to remedy this? I have perhaps 85% of ads blocked right now, but the frames are leftover.
But the list of things I don't miss, mainly performance issues, is long enough to let me make the switch from Firefox. The Sunspider benchmark is twice as good versus Firefox, and 1.5x better than Chrome! -
I don't think you can make the frames for the ads go away from just within the browser itself - you're just blocking the download of the actual content, but the html elements that set out the space for the element that will hold that content is still there. I seem to remember reading somewhere about a javascript bookmarklet one could write that would go the final step and permit one to modify the css for the ad elements so that their "display" attribute was changed to "hidden" (which would cause the frame element to disappear) - I'll see if I can't find where I read about it.
-
Ooh that's sneaky. I should familiarize myself with the DOM inspector and such.
Thanks in advance! -
If you tried the Opera 10.50 beta and weren't satisfied, definitely just download the full thing.
I tried doing the 10.50 beta and it was a terrible experience. I crashed about 5 times within two hours, I've been running the real version now for about a couple days and I love it. -
I have tried it for about half an hour then uninstalled it. Speed is ok, but too many useless features and nonstandard UI.
-
Fully functional automatic adblocking: Adsweep userscript - it removes the frames as well.
Built-in features in Opera that I love include mouse gestures (just do a gesture to get a prompt to enable it), robust newsfeed reader, great download manager, IE-linking for compatibility (right click, Open With > Internet Explorer), a very customizable UI, Opera Link, etc. -
For anyone else who's doing this: You need to save the Javascript files (.js) into one folder, and then tell Opera to use that folder in Preferences>>Advanced>>Content>>Javascript Options.
Mouse gestures are nice, I'm still learning them. I think this is the browser with the biggest learning curve simply because it has the most integrated features. Every minute I spend poking around at the settings or configuration something cool happens. -
Any More Helpful javascripts you can push me towards!!
thanks a lot !!!
p.s would really love that next page load in a forum
p.p.s - can i change the name of the userscripts without it affecting them ?? -
Yes, I believe you can change the name of the userscripts without messing them up.
Here's another very useful link: http://operawiki.info/CustomButtons
There, you can find a bunch of buttons that you can simply drag onto Opera's toolbars, to perform various tasks.
A few that I like are:
Reload Every button (you can set a page to reload automatically every minute, 5 minutes, etc), which takes the right-click context menu functionality and puts it on the toolbar
Mark All as Read button for my Newsfeeds
and before Opera implemented the collapased Menu Bar, I also used the Hide Menu Bar button. -
upgraded from 10.1 to 10.5..
in all of my computer there are some problem.
most problem comes from....
DELL Dimension 8400 windows XP desktop (P4 3.2ghz, ATI X300)
Thinkpad X300 Vista notebook (C2D SFF 1.2Ghz, Intel IGP)
Custom Desktop has less problem but its still there.
web site compatibility seems to improve though.
any idea when the updated version will be out? -
@MidnightSun
Thanks A Lot, I Knew about the custom buttons
Even i had the drop down menu.
Plus got my speed dial customised for 60 web pages -
I like the 'feel' of opera a lot better than firefox on my laptop, but so far I haven't been able to find an adblock plugin/extension/addon/etc that blocks 99% of all ads right out of the box. Is there something I've missed that I can install with opera that takes care of that for me?
The adblock-plus extension for firefox for example, comes with a subscription service which blocks pretty much everything.
EDIT:
-
It was found with a major flaw with security.
-
has anyone had a problem resetting (or force-setting) Opera 10.50 as the default browser on win7/64?
-
-
The Opera team is usually pretty quick about security patches, and also, there are benefits of using a browser that has a relatively small percentage of the total market share - few sites are specifically targeting Opera. -
All the same, I do appreciate your filling in the gaps the other poster left! -
After I posted, I went back and started playing around with the new Opera, and so far it does seem quite fast - and once I figured out how to start mangling the task bars to satisfy my browser habits, I like it - I may take it for a spin as my daily driver for a while!
I also like the dragonfly feature very much! I've recently been getting into coding webpages myself, and I can see that being an absolutely fantastic tool for working on my own junk.
Thumbs up for the new Opera version, and hopefully they'll get that non-major bug zipped up asap. -

10.51 build snapshot released.
-
So far I've been enjoying Opera - don't know if I'll switch permanently, but it's a pretty decent browser (hey, before you get me for that, remember that you're speaking to a lifelong IE-phile who just recently started trying non-IE browsers).
-
i liked 10.50 when i tried it but i can't see myself moving to opera from firefox for 2 reasons:
adblock plus
ability to use ie rendering engine in browser (i removed ie8, so firefox with ietab allows me to use one browser for all tasks, including accessing those ie-coded sites) -
Question to Opera fans:
There are some things I like about the browser, but the #1 reason I won't adopt it is the off-kilter way it displays pages -- at least on my machine.
Is this normal, or is it just my installation that somehow got messed up?

Looks much better!

I recently downloaded 10.51 as i've been away from Opera for awhile. Wow very impressive wrt speed. I love the new look of the browser as well. I now have it set to my default browser to see if I can replace the clunky FF.
-
I find that flash is finnicky on Opera. Things like Google Street View sometimes don't load correctly, and a few pages don't render the same as Firefox (mainly heavy javascript things), despite a 100/100 Acid3 score. I think once Firefox adopts the webkit engine I'll switch back. In the meantime, Opera is so much faster...
-
Hi guys,
Do you know how to add a back/forward "history" button to Opera? For example, if I surfed 10 web pages and want to go back to the second one, instead of hitting "back, back..." I just need to click a small triangular button next to back/forward and choose the second url from below. I really miss that feature on IE/Firefox. -
-
go to appearance settings (hit shift+f12)
then go to the "buttons" tab
select "browser" in the sidelist that appears
i think what you're looking for is the 7th/8th option down, just drag it to wherever you want -
wow, I tried both ways and they're great. Thank you guys.
Opera's UI is so simple that I need some time to learn more about it. But I like Opera also because of its UI, which leaves a lot of space for viewing on my tiny 12'' screen. -

anyone facing the same issue? -
@facadegeniality: Working perfectly fine for me. Opera 10.51, Win7 Pro 64-bit. What problems are you having?
-
Hello!
Could anyone tell me about how to make Opera not close multiple tabs when press red X in the corner without warning me to confirm such as FF does " are you sure to close all tabs".
Thanx. -
