This thread is not supposed to start another "browser's war" but I'd like to have you opinions about these 2 browsers regarding some points. I have used both and I can honestly say that they are both very good and work rather similary. I'm a little more on the side of Opera 8 (registred so no ads) because it feels a little more "professional" to me and has some nices features that FireFox lacks (easy close of tabs etc) although this is nothing bad for FireFox. Basically I find that both browsers work similary in term of performances but I heard that some websites do not work with Opera wince most webdesigners work on IE and FireFox.
But the main point here is about security. FireFox is claimed to be safe. While this is true when compared to Internet Explorer, I have some little doubts right now, doubts that are maybe totally unfunded but.... As FireFox is open-source, this would mean that anybody with required skills is able to know how the security routines in FireFox work so it should be easier to break them no???? On the other hand, Opera is not open-source so it's maybe more protected????? However it seems that most spyware removers such as Spyware Blaster do work only on IE and FireFox because those are the most widely used browsers and here Opera is left behind..........
So all in all, which Browser do you think offers the best overall security???
And what's your opinion about Opera 8 vs FireFox 1.0.4? Which one do you like most and why (forget the price of Opera registred version, only performances and features is interesting here)?
Thanks

I've have used both, and i'm sticking to opera., runs faster than FF, better tab organization. and love the mouse gesture thing. it also has email client built into it as well as an IRC client

Regarding Opera...
I'm wanting to use Opera as my primary browswer, and I also am going to change my security suite to either PC-Cillin or Zone Alarm
But I understand PC-Cillin does not work with Opera???
What is your solution??? Any advice on this?
I'll be using the new Asus A6ne.
Thanks,

I've gotten used to Firefox. Opera is supposed to be faster but barely noticeable. Its less compatible with website, but then again Firefox has issues with some code too.
One thing that bugs me about both firefox, opera and tabbed browsing is the huge amount of ram it eats up. Especially FF, I can have two tabs open and the ram will slowly go up, reaching 75megs before stopping.

changing after having gotten used to something is hard!
I have been wanting to try opera for months now, but I am just too used to FF.
Only thing about FF that bugs me is it takes time to start up, not sure if opera will start faster than FF thou. But once FF is up and running I have absolutely no complaints.

Both Opera and FireFox use ALOT of Ram. I've had FF eat up to 120mb of RAM after quite some time. There are some tricks that are supposed to "solve" the problem on FF but they did not work for me. However with actual computers and 1gig of RAM, this is not a problem, just annoying.......but Opera has that too maybe slightly less.
Regarding compatibility with website, I've not come across errors with Opera 8 up to now. Version 6 and 7 were causing me more troubles when I tried them and I kept using.................Internet Explorer. Now with Opera 8, it seems that the compatibility is very very good and most websites that were not functionning with Opera 6-7 are OK now. I also have no complain in this regard with FF which displays things perfectly.
I still prefer Opera because it includes everything while you have to download difficult to find and sometime buggy extensions for FF. Moreover, I really like the "Wand" feature of Opera which stores passwords on webpages you visit so that you don't need to re-enter them all the time when cookies are disabled. Don't know if a similar feature exists for FF as extention though. Closing tabs is really easier and faster with Opera because it does include a cross button on each tab. It also stores tabs you closed during your session in case you want to go back to one of them after having closed it.
Overall I find these 2 browsers excellent but Opera 8 still feels superior to me for all these little extra features. -
I was bored and I thought I would give opera a shot. Why do they have a paid and free version? What's the difference?

i had the exact same question. Here is the answer that I found http://tntluoma.com/opera/lover/7/ads/
Even with that, is Opera worth $39?

I think I'll give it a try before I decide.
I guess it would be worth it if the only other option was IE, but with FF around I highly doubt it.
Thanx for the link SG! []

I gave opera a try the other day, and it's a definite NONE keeper. Not all of gmail's features work in it, address autocomplete doesn't work, and richtext formating is unavailable (browser not supported). Since I use gmail to forward all my emails from other addresses to this is a problem for me.
I liked the wand though. It's nicer than haveing a drop down appear under the user name field.
Btw the TEXT adds aren't too bothersome, if I was using it I wouldn't pay to have them removed.

Currently I have all 3 still installed IE FF and Opera. And I can fully use all three at the same time. The only thing that would change, is that you have to select one to be your default browser and tell the others to stop checking if they are the default one, so they wouldn't bug you with a message each time they start up. What default browser means, is in which browsers should links open in, links from saved shortcuts to web pages, or when some software tries to open a page where would it open it.
Although I use FF all the time, I am sometimes forced to use IE for pages that don't run correctly in FF, but this is becoming rare, especially that FF is continuously improving. Pages that don't work well in FF usually have some code that is IE specific, so it's the fault of the web designer not FF.

Yes you can leave I.E and have no problems. You can even run both at the same time. The only problem you'll have is with cookies/autofill features. If you visit this site with I.E., then come back a few hours later and visit it with FF, it will some threads as being unread eventhough you've read them. Cookies/autofill doesn't transfer between the two.
Besides that, you won't have very many problems. If FF needs any additional plugins, it will popup and ask you if you want to download/install these.

I have been wanting to try out Firefox. I have a question that I'm told yes to all the time but I don't know if the answers really correct. If I download Firefox, can I leave IE and switch between the two without problems? I do know several people that have more than one browser (techs w/their own TV/Radio show) and say there is no problem. I've researched it and I come up with 50/50 in opinions. I'm used to IE but I would prefer trying Firefox. I've put it off for over a year or so because I don't want to uninstall IE,if that can be done.
Any suggestions, help appreciated. The more the better.
Thanks in advance,

P.S Firefox has no Active X so I wonder if that would cause problems. Opera for me is out. I actually did try it for one day and it wasn't for me. -

Problem with opera!
I am still trying to see if opera is worth it. so i was typing an email in gmail, and all of a sudden cpu usage shoots to 100% and my fans start to blow at full blast. even the letters that I am typing start to appear one at a time with something like a delay of 1 secound.
Anyone experienced this before? I never have such problems using gmail with IE or FF.
Gmail is all java scripts, and in java when you have something go wrong that is exactly what happens (trust me I know and hate java, I worked with java enough to know all of its crap []) ... so this might be an issue between Opera and the java runtime environment.
Mind you I use the Java runtime environment (latest version) that is released by SUN, not whatever usually comes built into windows! The windows thing doesn't cut it for the type of work I do.
So I guess I will be flushing Opera ... back to my beloved FF []. Actually a few days ago the "Forecast Fox Extension" got an update and now its way nicer, it has a radar in it. So whoever has the old one, hit the update button [
], others give it a try if you live in an area with ridiculous weather changes!

On my previous laptop, I have four browsers, the three meantioned, plus the SBC Yahoo DSL msie knockoff browser. I want something to stop all the drudgereport popups. In msie, ff, opera I have blockup blocking set to max and still drudge can open a couple popups. Has anyone else experienced this? Especially if I haven't visited in a day or two, with msie set to block ALL popups, drudge can popup 3 or 4 windows when I click on a story.

Well i have not tried opera, i am certain that from what i have read i like my firefox much better. I like the plug-ins you can download to create a fully customizable browser. I also like tabbed browsing!

One thing that frustrated me in FF is that clicking a link which spawns a new window opened up a new window. I would prefer that it just opened up a new tab, but none of the configuration options I tried seemed to allow that.

No problem at all with Opera 8 and Gmail. I haven't come across any problem with any websites for now with version 8 actually. If someone experience troubles, please let me know with which website it occur so that I can try out.

I'm telling you all - try Flashpeak SlimBrowser! I don't know why it was never mentioned in this thread, but it is by far the best browser I've used, and I've been using it for a couple years now. It has the best of all the features that the other browsers have, tabbed windows, skinable, pop-up blocker, zoom, etc. It used to get a lot of exposure on "The Screen Savers" but then Firefox put some money in G4s pocket and you don't hear about anything else anymore.
Probably the only other browser I would try is Firefox, but I've used it and for some reason I just don't like it as well. It seems more "complicated" for some reason, I really can't put my finger on it.
Of course you can install whatever browsers you want and use them independently or all at the same time, but please try SlimBrowser - it's worth the effort. -

I have a question. I dowloaded Fx about 9 days ago so I have not researched or familiarized myself enough but I have a issue ocurring while using FX. I'm on a Website already clicking on a different link or I try to go to a site when I receive a message "the website none.com cannot not b found" (exact words not quite,I can't remember)???
I click OK and etry (not restart) 10% out of 100% I will get the same response and other times it will work, rarely. I have all firewalls turned off except router and al cookies,ect....are allowed, which is what I assumed was most likely the problem. I have looked and not even come close to an answer.
Does anyone have the same problem or know what it could be [?][?][?] I still feel like It's a securitity issue that I'm missing.
This is really odd when I'm already on the website...
Help would be deeply appreciated,
Heart

What is the exact wording? Is it "Website none.com cannot be found"? If it is, that sounds a lot like spyware or a virus. I don't know what spyware or antivirus tools you use, but try them.
If you don't know what to try, these ones are pretty simple and free:

No! It's not spyware ! I know for sure and I already run Adaware and Spybot along with mine. I think my problem and from what most have told me so far is that I have to much antivirus,etc...set up and need to disable ,change settings more. I just don't now what or for sure...but 3 people all said the same thing yesterday. Like I said,I don't now what else to disable,if that.
Thank you for trying,

As of now I've gravitated towards Opera 8 as my default browser with wand and sessions being preferred features.
