New computer. Dell Vostro 2.0 ghz. 1GB ram. 256 mb vid card. Vista Premium

Not running basic processes very well? Also, Civilization 4 runs smoother on my roommates 3yr old integrated graphics Dell. Its choppy, sometimes actually really bad. Runs like a full system scan is running on my old computer. (Checked processes...nothing it eating it up. )

Is Vista really that bad with 1gb of ram? or is there something else wrong?

Try upgrading the RAM (a stick of 2GB only costs ~40$). It shouldn't be this bad with 1GB, but it may be the main culprit.

You could also try one of the newer video drivers (if you haven't already) at www.laptopvideo2go.com .

And yeah, add some RAM, as the last poster said.

Also, when new, Vista may be slower for a few hours while it indexes your hard drive. Check Control Panel > Sys & Maint > Indexing Options... and see if it says "Indexing complete" yet or not.
