Does anybody have an idea how to optimize my MS Vista (64-bit) system for bittorrent? My old computer, which ran XP (SP2) could achieve high DL rates (100+kb/s) but since ive been running Vista 64 on my new Sager, I cant seem to be able to download higher than 30kb/s. Also, Im pluged into the router directly, rather then going wireless, in hope that I can raise my DL speeds.

    Forgive my noob-ness in advance!

    Router: Dlink 624
OS: Vista 64 (I got 4 gigs of ram on this Sager 9262, so they would have installed 64 i assume)
    Bittorrent client: Bittorrent v6.0.2

ANy tips? I found this link, but it seems pretty complicated, and I have come to trust only those who offer advice on this forum!

    Thanks for the help!

If you haven't applied the tcpip patch on your older XP machine then don't worry about that link you provided.

Its worth doing the speed check on both with identical torrents, don't compare it to a torrent you downloaded ages ago since seeds, peers and status of the torrent keeps changing. I suggest you fire up both machines, download this torrent (let it run for 5-10 min, don't fully download it) as its seeded very well and have a look at the speeds the XP and Vista machines are getting

Vista comes with windows defender and windows firewall already on, both of which may be giving limited access to bittorrent.

Another possibility could be that if your router assigns different IP addresses to each computer plugged in then you will maybe have to open ports for each IP address as well, and then use that open port number in bittorrent.

Also since you like advice from people on this forum, I suggest you get rid of bittorrent and install utorrent

My old PC has since melted, and is no longer operational!

My home network is set up as such:

Dlink router with 2 notebooks - one running XP and mine, which is running Vista64

Who is your ISP? You might be throttled. 100kB/s is nothing quick....

I got no problems on bittorent (also, use utorrent client), I can download between 150-800kB/s easily

test out some new and boosting smaller torrents, i find some larger ones rarely gte over 30/40kbs and take a long time, some fly down at 200ks

    Thanks for the help.

Ive googled around and ive found about 50% of people are saying bittorrent is faster, and 50% say that utorrent is faster (plus uses less comp resources).

SInce most of you seem to prop utorrent, ill give it a try! 100kb/s is what I would consider "fast", with my cable modem conection. Its probably because there are only 10 and 13 seeds, respectively, that I am getting DL speeds of 20kb/s and 10kb/s average.

    Again, thanks for the replies!
