Am using Outlook 2007 on Microsoft Exchange and have been noticing lately that I get alot of the "Not Responding" messages which is followed by me shutting it down and restarting.
I recently reinstalled Vista and all of my Microsoft components.
What could be causing this?
-
Do you have avast anti virus installed? I know on mine the avast plug in freezes outlook 2007 every once and a while.

One person seemed to get a hand on this a few years back.

Mainly it has many things to do with certain Vista updates.

Which files, where are they found, etc?
Sorry, but for a not so savvy guy like me he writes terrible instructions.
BTW-the system keeps freezing every time I try and attach a Power Point Presentation to an email! -
We can start baby-steps
. Make sure that you have your Vista up-to-dates. I recommend using the Windows Upates functionality and choose the option of "customised" updates. This way you'd see others extra available update options.
. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932086/ has some explanation about system freezes when working with Power Presentation files.
Try these steps, then let us explore further.

My problem is I dont know where these .ost or .pst files are.
Lastly, it wouldnt make sense that I would need to split up my "pst" files or change my sync settings as I dont have that much info in Outlook and, really have never had to do any of this before...
As for the original link you sent me with those file adjustments; where do I find those? -
You meant the "extend.dat" and the "frmcache.dat"?
Looked under your ... AppData/Local/Microsoft/Outlook and ...AppData/Local/Microsoft/FORMS folders?
You might have to switch on the option of "Display Hidden/System Files" from your folder option.

The link you originally sent me want me to change the .dat to .old.
What will that do exactly and why should I do it?
(BTW-my OST file is 1.2GB; is that too large?) -
Changing the .dat to .old is like giving the app a chance to rebuild/create a new clean file.
1.2GB - a tat large, I would say

So im guessing the "old" files will remain the size that they are and outlook will now create new "dat" files for me essentially breaking up the size of the files and making things faster?
I checked back there after changing things and re-opening outlook and this happened only in the outlook folder but not for the "cache".
Will that happen at some future point?
Are these the only two files that constitute my ost/outlook backup?
Any other suggestions?
Sorry for all the questions; thanks for the help. -
http://www.sitedeveloper.ws/tutorials/outlook.htm
explains more about the structure of Outlook.
Let us just hope that it would resolve your current issue first.
And no problem with questions, that's what forums are all about - questioning and answering.

Why is my file an "ost" and not a "pst"? -

OST = Offline Folder; PST = Personal Folder

I dont know why you should not have both file types.
The .pst is needed so that users can cleanup their emails from the server and store them on their hard drive.
The .ost is a way for laptop users to see everything in it, in OffLine mode, when they were last online.
