I know one of the features of Vista is that it keeps most used apps in memory so that they don't have to be started from HD every time.
But how do I close Outlook - and really close it (ie kill the process)? When I leave my laptop on at home and step out I need Outlook to not send/receive from my pop mail. But even when I close Outlook, the process is still running and it seems to be sending/receiving in the background. Without going into task manager, is there a way to close an application in Vista and not have it stay in RAM?

. r u using Google Desktop?
. what antivirus app r u using?
. this is not just outlook2007/vista, lots of users having the same issue with XP and even Outlook2003 as well

Strange. When I close my Outlook 2007 it is removed from the running processes list. It definitely does not receive or send anything until I start it again. I use Vista and Office 2007.
Perhaps there is some setting in outlook that makes it always loaded and operating. I prefer manual send/receive functionality.
So go to your Outlook, Options, Mail Setup tab, Send/receive Button and UNCHECK the Automatic Send/receive every 30 minutes (which is set by default). That way even when Outlook is up and running, it will not automatically do anything.
From your post I assume you want your POP mails available when you are not at home. So perhaps you can also "fix" your problem by setting Outlook to leave copies of your messages on server for a day for example, so even when your Outlook receives mail from your POP server, it will be still available for access from some other place.
I hope this helps,

Occasionally Windows Media Player's process will still be there playing music when i try to close it. It just won't close till i kill the proces... think it might be another new bug with Vista.

I've noticed that too. And if I open another MP3 song it would start playing that song without showing any window whatsoever. Strange.

i think he is just talking about prefetch lol
which btw Windows XP has -
That's an annoyance I had with WMP in Vista. Closing the window, a pop-up would appear somewhere and make me confirm to close it, and even checking the box that says "Do not ask me this again" didn't seem to do anything.
