I hope someone could help me here...
(I had a very bad day yesterday, and my problem is a result of that)
Anyway:
By accident somehow all Programms were copied into a folder named "programmes" in the programmes list in the start menu.
I deleted this as I though it didn't belong there - well, that folder contained all software links.
Thus I reinstalled Vista Business on my Sony Vaio SZ - installed SP1, then Kaspersky, did a registry clean... installed Windows update - installed MS Office Home and Student and Microsoft Outlook.
And here is my problem:
I'm not getting an Outlook Icon on the desktop - tried repairing Outlook, changing stuff - deinstalling and installing it again...
Nothing. Can someone help me here?
I googled my problem - some people had it before, in this case it contained a registry entry - I looked at my registry, and I haven't got the entry. Also - I don't know how to create a registry entry should one be needed.
Help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
(I don't want to reinstal everything)

Are you not able to start > programs > outlook > right click and send to desktop as a shortcut?
And btw, which office version is it? 2007? -
Silly me, yes it is Outlook 2007.
Yes, I can start it that way - but:
The icon is different (not as nice) and its a link.
And there may have been some functionality attached to the original icon... (not sure though) -
Ok.. can you get the registry key path? a screenshot or something?
And have you see this? > http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=596825&view=findpost&p=588957631
And while repairing, did you do something similar to the following?
-
Yes, I have seen this, but:
I haven'T got the last registry entry...
I'll try getting a screen shot of it. -

Look here...
http://myerudition.blogspot.com/2007/09/clsid-folders-hide-folder.html
Apparently, those CLSID values are kinda specific for each icon' / programs you see on the desktop for example... in your case, we might have to figure out the code for Outlook and then enter it...
The above link, tells us about how to remove certain icons' mainly, so since we want some back, we just have to add the new entries.. but first, check out the outlook reg key value for CLSID... I am searching too. -
Look here > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828550 if it will give you any info!! (browse down..)
-
Hmm - the path in the "delete icons article" is diffeferent to the one in the forum... (odd...) Sadly it doesn't list Outlook.
The Microsoft article - it doesn't do too much to help, but:
I verified that Outlook is registered with the correct path.
I've got this in my registry: w_1^VB!!!!!!!!!MKKSkOUTLOOKFiles>tW{~$4Q]c@zPX6FxaTO5
????
Type -> REG_MULTI_SZ
Name-> LocalServer32
Whatever that means...
Edit: Just saw something... chage path of "Local Server"... lets try...
Update: Didn't do anything - returned to old value. Downloading Outlook Updates too... -
Well... bit lost now
btw, did you try that repair option again with the box checked?
Or just wait for the experts (think Andy or McGrady or one of those guys can help out, I remember they are pretty good in these things!) to drop indon't mess with the registry too much, mate!!
-
I couldn't find it in Outlook.
I did go via the "Deinstall Programms" list and went there into repair. Also reinstalled it...
I wouldn't be surprised if it was caused by the fact that I installed SP1 before Outlook... On my old Medion laptop XP SP3 blocked any installation of IE7... -
Well.. strange! because with the reg key' most thing must be able to be fixed pretty well!!.. let me think again.. cheers.
-
Thank you very much for trying to help.
Especially - I don't feel like installing everything all over again. -
well, I can understand.. most of the time I hate doing this reinstall-all-over thing, too.. and I did manage to fix almost all the issues I have had till now, without a reinstall.. anyway, will get back if I can think of something / find something thats been shown to work! and I guess there must be a way to fix this issue of yours without a reinstall!... just need to find the right path / right reg key or whatever...
-
Try rebuilding icon cache.. Good luck
-
I saw this one too, but would this apply for 'missing icon's'? I thought it wouldn't (may be I was wrong!!) -
Also changed from 32Bit to 16Bit and back...nothing -
-
No need to be sorry. At least it was worth a try.
Fonduekid mentioned in a PM that this issue existed before SP1 - it may be that this problem was caused by SP1 - which I can't deinstal as I've used Vsp1cln.exe ... having no prior problems... -
I need my laptop fully working on Monday - so to have some time to instal and make sure everything is working, I think I'll reinstal my OS.
Again, thank you very much for your input and suggestions.
Sadly it didn't work.
(I hate reinstalling my OS ever so often... and all worked so well...  )
Anyway: I'll reinstal my OS at 18.45 Central European Time
17.45GMT
I'll see if anybody has any other suggestions before this deadline - and may offset my reinstallation. (Its not quite a clean instal, recovery discs by Sony)
Thank you again for your input! -
Try this, link
-
-
Ok - this does recreate an icon, but:
If I doubleclick it twice I get two Outlook Windows - doublecklick it again, another one... so the link in Quickstart is better...
 unhappy with having to go through the instal cycle agian but I can't help it...
Thank you very very much!
Your help is and was much appreciated - but I think I have to go through a torture session (-> reinstalling and tidying up) once again...
Thanks again! -
I got that, but:
The multiple Outlook Windows... these don't normally happen...
I'm on my mother's laptop now while my SZ is restored once again... -
Now I'm confused...
I reinstalled Vista Business... installed Outlook and still no desktop icon.
Now I'm pretty sure I had the icon on my desktop before... sadly I haven't got any "original" screenshots...
So what have I got:
Confusion... and ruined nerves (my nerves are ruined anyway, having to reinstal everything makes it worse)
Also:
Without the icon I would have a "gap" on my desktop...
Confusion, confusion, confusion...
Thanks again for your input! -
-
Yes - I mean the real outlook icon.
Well, yes, normally you doubleclick it once...
But: I often manage to click onto the wrong icon - don't ask me why or how...
(Possibly missing pen and paper) and then I don't want 3 or 4 Outllok WIndows...
Now I've reinstalled Windows - installed Office & Outlook - then messed up Vista uisng the defragmentaion and the disc cleanup...
(No icon on that) - Well, Vista repaired itself but lost Sony functions ...
Now I've got everything installed again... it works
But: No icon...
Outlook Icon missing
