A lot of places offer a free PC cleanup/checkup. Some places even charge money for it. Does anyone know what exactly they do?

Do it yourself. *But does this cleanup / checkup refer to the complete PC? as in the hardware, open it all up, blow all the dust out and stuff?? or are you referring to cleaning up the system from within Windows and such???*

I'm pretty sure he means companies like GeekSquad. You can usually do a good yourself for a lot less money.

Ah ok... that pretty much is good enough.. as the prev post says, get in CCleaner.. its super good and powerful. You may want to use EasyCleaner too which I have been using and is good enough.. *BUT* remember to be a bit careful with easycleaner and I suggest reading LES' guide (the sticky vista tips thread in Windows OS forum) for some suggestions on sage usage of EasyCleaner.

A good real time protection with a good AV (either Norton latest products or the one of the free stuff), a good firewall, windows defender should also keep your system basically clean.. it works for me well that way... And a weekly scan and clean up of the system is good.. but if you dont have the time to do it every week, at least once in two or 3 weeks is recommended.. of course depends on your browsing habits.. if you are clean enough with that, then I don't think you should have too many issues :)

Also a disk cleanup every week helps a lot for space.. and remember to do this before doing the defrag... Good luck. Cheers.
