. any processes that were running?
. review ur combination of turn off screen and sleep when no active process
. the lockscreen probably has something to do with requiring a password to re-wake
. review ur power schemes again

    cheers ...

That's simple. Do you have a wireless Mouse or share your media content with another Device on the network? (MCE or Another PC)

What is your power setting at? (High Performance, Balanced, etc)

I found that my computer would not sleep when set to High Performance, but did just fine on Balanced. It was not a "wake-on" setting or BIOS setting. I never narrowed that problem down, so I'll keep an eye on this thread if anyone can.

If you look under advanced options on the Vista Power Settings, there are several options on what the computer should do if you put it to sleep, close the lid, etc. It might be for that power setting that the computer is set to turn the monitor off but not go to sleep. I set mine that way for when I am downloading torrents and don't want my PC to sleep. Most likely it's set for "When I Press Sleep" to turn off the monitor and lock.

i have always had a custom "High Performance" power setting that would sleep after 30 min, and i have already changed the close lid stuff so it would sleep, but i do have a wireless mouse (non-bluetooth).

Try changing the power setting to "Balanced" and see if it works. If it does, you are experiencing the same problem I had.

Hmm so that's why! I had the same problem. Sleep would work under battery mode but not plugged in.

I have no idea why. I scoured the web to no avail. I imagine there could be a KB article at some point, but it doesn't happen to everyone. What are the specs of your system? This was happening to me on my desktop which has an Intel desktop board.

How are you attempting to put it in sleep mode? What are you pressing or clicking on?

Are you using Vista Battery saver? I just noticed that when it is running, my computer locks instead of going to sleep now. It used to sleep just fine with vista battery saver running.
