Occasionally, I'll get PM pop up notifications from various vBullutin forums without even having the forum page loaded in tabs using Firefox.

I really don't mind, but it's kind of weird. Anyone else see that?

Does it happen only after you've visited the site(s) in question during that particular session, or will it also happen even if you've not yet visited that particular site since you last turned your system on?

Go to User CP, Edit Options, Messaging and Notifications, untick the box at the bottom regarding popups if you want to disable them.

I'd have to think it's the former. Next time it happens I'll try to note it.

No, I don't mind. I just found it odd, I didn't even have the site opened, or on another tab.

It's like a 1" x 3" pop up all by itself. I swear, one time, I think Firefox may have been closed or at least minimized.

Could be the preview thumbnails being updated that brings up the pop-up.

The pop ups are messages saying I have a PM on such and such a site from so and so. They really have nothing to do with Speed Dial itself that I can figure except that all the sites are on Speed Dial.

For this to happen, either the FF addon keeps you logged onto that forum or monitors your email. I don't think I like the idea of pm's popping up automatically. This would mean that anyone who just happens to use my browser could be notified of my pm and follow it. With a messenger service, at least I know to shut it down when I'm away.

That's what I was thinking - that somehow there's some functionality in your FF setup that's keeping the connection to the various forums alive, with the result that you get the pm message pop-up. That would suggest that whatever's doing it is periodically sending a refresh command of some sort back to the forum's webserver because, at least as far as I know, those pm pop-ups (from NBR, at least) only pop up when a page is downloaded or refreshed from the forum's webserver.

One way to get a sense of what's going on would be to run Microsoft's Network Monitor (or other suitable packet monitor) with a filter set so that it only captures packets going to, or coming from, the forum server(s) in question.

I'm the only one that uses my computer so I'm not concerned about someone reading my PM's.

It's only happened a few times. Last night I asked someone to PM me, closed that tab with Speed Dial open in another tab but couldn't reproduce it happening. If it happens again, I'll try to note exactly which pages were open etc.

It probably wouldn't happen instantaneously, but only when something in the browser configuration tries to refresh the connection to the forum servers.
