Well after setting up my WHS 2011 box this year, I was quite excited. Been running flawlessly so far. Well I have one machine that I decided to use with Windows 8. Lo and behold I couldn't get it to back up to my WHS box. It would just get stuck at 1% for a long time then error out. I find out that WHS 2011 won't backup EFI or GPT partitions. And since Microsoft terminated update support (other than security patches) it will likely never get fixed. This means for Windows 7 boxes everything is hunky dory as long as I use MBR. But for uEFI, forget it. Time to look for another server option. I don't see myself updating to Windows 8, but EFI is here to stay, so likely sometime in the next year or so will have to find alternative server software. Grrr. Damn you Microsoft. DAMN YOU!

Of course a simple solution is to just not use EFI and use good ol' MBR, but that's silly and only a temporary stop gap since anything released in the future will likely utilize EFI.

Amahi Home Server looks like a good open source Linux alternative to WHS. I hope it's not too cryptic. Time to break open a new VM...
