This is the error I am seeing (and lots of these) in the event viewer...

"Configuring the Page file for crash dump failed. Make sure there is a page file on the boot partition and that is large enough to contain all physical memory."

Can someone tell me what this is about? I have lots of this error lying around... and I do have a pagefile set...

Any solutions too would be appreciated to stop getting this error.

    Thanks in advance.

    Update >>> I read this article - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955635

It says, "CAUSE: This problem occurs when the Smss.exe process calculates the free disk space and the ideal page file size during the startup process. During the startup process, the page file size is managed by using the System managed size option.

If there is not enough free disk space, the Smss.exe process deletes the existing page file. Then, the Smss.exe process tries to re-create the page file. However, the Smss.exe process does not correctly calculate free disk space after it deletes the existing page file."

And there is a hotfix available for this... but they say apply the hotfix only for the problem mentioned in this article.

I want to know how do I decide if I should apply this article, and how do I confirm that this error is because of the smss.exe process?

And do you think I should apply this hotfix?

    Please let me know.

    Go to -

Computer - Properties - Advanced - Startup and Recovery.

Under Write Debugging Information, select None or Small memory dump.

    Restart.

    Done (hopefully).

Yes it did work :) Thanks a lot Silas... I don't see that error anymore...

But why was it set to kernel memory dump first and why did we have to change it now? And why was the error there then and not now? Is it simply because of the size?

And are there any disadvantages now with this change? Or will there be any effect on performance or stability or function or anything?

And also I forgot to mention, I dont have system managed size enabled for pagefile.. I have custom set it to 1300 MB.... so??

Sorry for any lame Q's but I have absolutely no tech background on these things.. Thanks in advance :)

I don't know. Maybe it's the default Windows setting?

It was there then because you probably don't have the Pagefile on the boot partition. Have you set the Pagefile to reside on your boot partition? Because a Kernel Memory Dump dumps only the kernel memory into a file called MEMORY.DMP by default and needs between 50 and 800MB of space for the paging file on the boot volume and not on another volume.

It's not there now because I'm simply too awesome for it.

I think it's because of the fact that your Pagefile is probably not on the boot partition. You could set the Pagefile to be on the boot partition, and then select Kernel Memory Dump again, and then see if the error persists.

I have it set on None, with Pagefile disabled for about 5 years now, I haven't seen any decrease in performance or stability or function or anything. I still perform the same, my girlfriend can testify to that. :)

    Probably not the reason.

Did you add new RAM after installing Windows?

Yeah, I think it was.. because I haven't changed / modified / tweaked any of those settings.

How do I know if I have a pagefile on the boot partition? I mean, I have C: OS, the place where the OS is and I guess that' where the boot partition is and thats where the pagefile now is.. so does that mean I have the pagefile on the boot partition??  I always get confused with these partition things.. :( :( Sorry if that was a dumb Q.

    :) :) :) :) You always have been... ;) ;)

    Same as above I guess...

    Nope, nothing added new...

Yes, it looks like you have the Pagefile on the boot partition.

Post this to confirm though (and mention on which partition's Windows installed) -

Though the error's gone, and you won't ever need the crash dump dung whatever, so....cheers! :)

Here.... to confirm... and Windows is on C:

So.... any more inputs now that the pagefile is in the boot partition?

Yes, it is on the boot partition, though it doesn't matter now.

Hmmm.. ok... so this minidump or small dump thing should just be fine and now throw up any issues right? :)

    Thanks again Silas, for everything.
