Photoshop is pretty nice. I still haven't figured out most of the stuff though. LOL

The Gimp!
Ok, I don't use it at work because it's not there yet for prepress. It has no color management, for example, but I find it easier to use overall, and I love the containerless design.
So at work I use Photoshop (but avoid it and use the RIPs wherever possible), mostly because it's the standard. I hate to say that, because I usually go for the underdog, but when people are sending you their graphics files it's a good idea to use what they do. -
Photoshop is much better. If you're looking for a cheap(er) alternative, get Corel Photopaint (comes with corel draw suite), or a free one, GIMP.
Generally speaking, in terms of features;
Photoshop > Photopaint > GIMP
In terms of cost,
Photoshop > Photopaint > GIMP
So basically, you get what you pay for (unless you don't pay for it *wink wink*). -
Im a big fan of photoshop. Nothing really beats it right now when you come down to it.
-
For simple image editing Paint.NET is a good choice. It's free like GIMP but easier to use. Otherwise I'd go with Photoshop.
-
Another vote for photoshop! it has great features even though its kinda complex at times.
-
PSP, simply because I'm unable to do the simplest things in Photoshop...
(not saying PSP is better, just that I prefer it) -
Photoshop no doubt (functionality), its what our school used and offered to us thru student discounts. However, the actual retail price is not attractive at all, and for the most part Paint Shop Pro can get the job done at a fraction of the Photoshop price.
Other programs to consider:
ULEAD PhotoImpact (Roughly, PSP's price I believe)
GIMP (Free), perhaps add in GIMPSHOP (Makes GIMP a lot friendly for PS users, however, more suited for MACs at the moment as I believe the Windows version of it is still very alpha stage)
Paint.NET (Free, this is probably the easist program to use but imo its quite decent) -
i have paint.net aswell the omly problem i have with it is the lack of "paste as new image " photoshop has this and it it a nice thing .especially because a post lot of pictures that i made my self and the keep the size down (and the junk of the picture ) i cut it off .and that simple thing far more easy in photoshop
can somebody help me with this in paint.net -

I'd like to use PSP when it was a Jasc programm but since Corel got its hand on it this one is going downhill. Besides, Photoshop is better anyway. But PSP once was my second pick, now it's not even in the Top5 anymore. I think Corel kinda ruined PSP.
-
^ Because PSP isn't meant to compete with Photoshop, it's more comparable to photoshop elements. (I think; I havn't used it much)
Corel's photoshop-like product is Photopaint (which is almost as good as photoshop). -
I like photoshop. It was confusing as hell tho at first but I've got some of the kinks out.
-
Never used paint shop ......so I'm going with photoshop in this one.
-
But I can't really tell what you were asking... I think cropping may be your answer though.
And, for my personal use (I don't have to worry about CMYK for print or anything), I like the Gimp. -
Voted PSP.. though I don't really like the new COREL branded version. IMO, the old version 7 or 8 was the best, I have used and liked it a lot. The new 10 is just too much of a beginner's toy.
On the performance platform: Both of them can do the image manipulation on a very high level. Where Photoshop clearly leads is the CMYK sphere, which I don't need. And since I only use image retouch in RGB, GIMP is just as good as PSP or Photoshop, you just have to get used to it a bit. But afterwards it is very good.
So if I could choose, I would choose GIMP!

Adobe Photoshop is ridiculously expensive, high-end software for skilled professionals.
This leads me to conclude that it should be superior to Corel. -
A Hummer is ridiculously expensive compared to an Atom, but the Atom goes over twice as fast. Depends on what you use it for.
-
Heh, when I first saw PSP in this topic, I was thinking about the handheld. I personally perfer photoshop. It may be tough to use at first, but it has a buttload of features for professionals.
Price did not matter to me *cough* *cough*. -
PhotoShop is nice but really overkill and I suspect overbloated to justify its high cost. PaintShop was cool years ago but I'm not so sure if its that great now nor can I justify paying for it. I do use Fireworks in conjunction with DreamWeaver and I like it. I am interested in using Paint.NET but for the moment I decided to give Picasa a try. My only complaint with it so far is that it does not work with PNG files.

I prefer Photoshop (CS2). I do use gimp on occasion though. It's included brushes are much better than Photoshop's.
-
Photoshop all the way for me. I use it almost daily, and can't find any comparison. I do think that it has a learning curve however, but once you are past it then nothing touches it.
As for brushes, I either make my own, or find some for download, as most included things in any program doesn't suit my usage very well. There are millions of free brushes out there, all you have to do is look.
