Anyone know of a free parental control software I can use for windows 7. The parental controls aren't as detailed as Vista. All I want is to be able to block downloads on certain user accounts, so as to stop junk being installed like mywebsearch, zango, and other unwanted crap. This isn't available in 7, and the windows live parental thing looks like junk as you have to setup everything online. I want something I setup within my computer.

    Cheers

    You are really clever.
To think you use this PARENTAL CONTROL SOFTWARE to deal with these annoying stuffs.
For me, it is a lame software. I disable it always.
Sorry, I don't have any parental control software.

Yep, as you obviously noticed, in Windows 7, parental controls have been pretty much neutered in favor of the Windows Live equivalents similar to what they did with Windows Movie Maker and other apps, as well as services from other software makers.

In this case, it's a step backward IMO since the parental controls were so well integrated into the OS (no need to create separate Windows Live ID's and login to the Live Family Safety app everytime you wanted to get online) Also, Windows Live Family Safety is for websites only and has no settings for Windows itself.

As a result of said neutering, integrated web filtering/Download blocking along with computer activity reports have been removed in Windows 7, and the parental controls panel will be made even more accessible to many third party apps for their own use/

For more info about what's changed with 7's parental controls see this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd630560(VS.85).aspx

maybe windows steadystate could help? don't know it's actual state, but it does allow user profiles to get locked down and such. don't know if it works on win7 yet, at all, actually.

and yes, my dad won't switch to win7 as well, as he won't get movie maker the way it is now on vista, and uses it as one of his main apps.
