I had a bit of a scare today, and I'm still a but nervous cuz I have no idea what this is, but when I was watching a video on my laptop today, I had this window pop up and disappear in the matter of half a second. I've had it before, and never actually got to take much notice of it, but this time I did manage to read a little of what it said. It was a pop up and said Parental Security on it.. I myself haven't installed anything on my computer called that, or anything to do with that, so somehow a program has been installed onto my computer that I wasn't aware of.
No one else other than me gets to use my laptop for any amount of time as to be able to install programs without me knowing, so I don't think it got there that way.

I guess my question is, how can I try and find this parental program thing? I don't know what it is, and hence I don't want it on my computer.
I know the information I've given - Parental Security - is pretty vague, but that's all I could make out in the time that it flashed up on screen.

    Thanks for any help.

Just like that three ideas come to my mind...

Your anti virus has a parental security feature which is enabled.
You have the Windows Live filter.

These would be potential candidates if the video was online - say on Youtube.

Otherwise - your DVD playing sftware may have a parental control setting.

Would you mind telling us what type of video?
i.e. Youtube, DVD, DVD on HDD, or home made.
And what software were you using?

The Security Suite would be interesting too - Kaspersky 2009 has it built in, not sure about others.

You can also check in Programme under Windows Live what you installed if you have any Live software installed.

Ok well it was an episode of dexter that was playing off my hard drive, in windows media player 11, on vista home premium. I have AVG 8 Free. Of the 'Live' series of programs, my Programs and Features list only shows:
    Windows Live Essentials
    Windoes Live Sign-in Assitant
    Windows Live Upload Tool

The first time I noticed this pop up was when I was watching dexter on megavideo via sidereel.com. I'll have a look in avg now and see if there is a parental feature.

Does this help you to help me?

    Yepp - definitively a start :)

From what I know - and just checking - Windows Media Player does not natively suppor parental control.
So it shouldn't come from windows Media player.

It doesn't look lke its Windows live either.

AVG - let me google it - from what it looks like no...
What Firewall do you use? Windows one? (Firewall was suggested for net filtering on a site I found via Google)

Yes I use the windows firewall. I had a look at AVG and it doesn't appear to have anything parental in it.

    This is strange...

The Windows Firewall does not have a parental control feature.

This means digging and trial and error now...

One more idea: You have a 3rd party parental control software on your computer.

My daftest idea would be some sort of malware - but that wouldn't disappear so quickly...
The pop-up may tell you where its from - but you said its too quick - have you got a video camera of any sort? If yes - try filming it.

I could try filming it, like a screen recorder or something. But I've had this laptop for over a year now, watched countless videos on here, and have only seen this pop up twice in all the time, granted they were pretty close together, so maybe I can do something about it.

The trial and error idea, how would I go about checking my computer? What should I check for? I wouldn't imagine it'd be too obvious if it is any sort of malicious software..

If it is a legitimate software it should show up under all installed programmes.
    -> control programmes -> (add)remove programmes

If it is malware - but that's just a daft guess - virus and spyware scans would help, I think AVG should do the job.

But otherwise... I'm sort of out of ideas :( sorry.
Only twice in "ages" sounds strange too - why out of a sudden?

That's a good question.. I have run AVG and it doesn't pick up anything, and checking installed programs doesn't show anything either.

I have recently had troubles with my laptop after trying to change the SID on a vista machine using a program meant for XP. I have a new laptop now, so this one will be formatted and sold or something, so it won't be a problem. I guess I just wanted to find out if I've been getting spied on or anything.

Thanks for your help though, very appreciated :)

    OK, you're welcome.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
