    Im trying to create partitions in a new 64Gb SSD.

    This is what I have:

    48Mb = Boot
    3Gb = MediaDirect
    29Gb = Vista Ultimate (C)
    20Gb = Ubuntu (F)

    Now, I keep trying to add another (G) of 10Gb as a Data drive but it tells me there is not enough space remaining on the disk. I have even tried to reduce the size and left it default to whats available...no luck.

    It wont let me create this partition.

    Thoughts??

    Is that the limit because, yes they are coloured blue which makes them all active volumes. I never knew there was a limit of four.

    yahhh that's the nearest answer... I can think too...
    You can only create up to 4 primary partitions

    Cheers for netwerks101.
    I add a rep

    Ok now...I need to create a few other partitions (ie Ubuntu swap/data) and I cannot extend with the new Vista Disk management program. Any thoughts?

    You must delete the last partition, create and extended partition in its place and only then creating volumes within it.
    I did that after deleting the Media Direct partition and shrinking Vista's partition.
    You can still install Ubuntu on a logical partition.

    It's strange, though, that Media direct was not the last partition you had on disk. Is that the actual order of the partitions? What does Gparted say?

    I believe this is a Vista Limitation. My current disk has six partitions created with the XP distribution disk.

    I doubt it.
    The MBR of a disk has 48 bytes only to accomodate the data for all its partitions.
    Every partition requires 16 bytes, so there can only be four partition, those that are called primary.
    To have more you beed a 'special primary partition', an extended partition that can chain data for other partitions (those are called 'logical'). But if you have 4 primary partitions already, you can't accomodate the extended partition.

    Evidently the tool created an extended partition without letting you know.
    Try a Linux live CD, un Gparted and see if you can spot the extended partition and the two volumes inside it.

    If the situation you are starting from is this:
    48Mb = Boot
    3Gb = MediaDirect
    29Gb = Vista Ultimate (C)
    20Gb = Ubuntu (F)

    No wonder you can't make any extended partition. You already have 4 primary partitions.
    If you deleted Ubuntu's partition and still can't create the extended partition the problem migh be in meida direct being the last primary partition. Vista's partition tool lies about the actual position of the partitions.
    Pop in a live CD of linux and use gparted to see how the partitions are arranged. Chanches are Media direct is the last partition and the unused space is 'locked in' between to used partitions (VIsta and Media direct).

    Is it so?
