My girlfriend when she got her laptop (LG LW20 Express, 80 GB HDD I think, XP Home Chinese Edition or something.)
She thought it would be a good idea to screw around with partitions with some chinese program, and she made a 9.26 GB partition for XP labeled "C:" and two 20GB pars for data and crap. And a RAM Disk I assume, labeled "S:" with 1.26GB which I have no clue what the heck a RAM Disk is.. If it's a partition on the HDD that erases upon reboot, or if it is some type of hardware disk....
Anyways I planned to install a streamlined version of XP Pro but The disk is bad and I don't feel like backing up all her data. I also tried Ubuntu Live CD but it came up with all sorts of errors and I'm not 100% sure she will like Linux.
Is there a safe way to get rid of these partitions with software? With out losing her data?
I have a copy of XP Home, and her Key, but her key is for the Simp CHN ver of XP... will that work?
But like I said I would much rather not have to back up her data, but XP whines as it only has 700 MB of free space, and I deleted most of what you can delete to give it more space...

You could try GParted Live

I definitely second using GParted Live CD to get things straightened out. I would say that safely partition the drive something like ~ 35-45 for os and data is the best way to go.
Delete the RAM Disk, combine the two 20GB sections, then go ahead to set the 35-45. After repartitioning, run check disk for both partitions by booting up with your XP cd and getting to the command prompt. This will ensure any errors are cleared up. After this, you are free to install using your existing XP key. Good luck. -
Wait I didn't ant to reinstall XP I want to just fix the partitions, and keep all the data.

Also since the product key is for XP SimpChn Home it will work fine with a regular off the shelf US copy of XP Home?

If you don't want to reinstall XP, then disregard the last steps, but make sure to run check disk from within windows after you reconfigure your page file. The key should reinstall XP on that computer with no issue, but since you are merely rearranging files, there is no need for the cd in the first place.

So I should use that program, delete the RAM Disk, merge the Data partitions and expand the XP partition size?
Then run check disk?
