    Hi
hopefully within the next 7 days i should have my m15x.
once i get it i was wondering if it would be ok to make a 20gb partition so as to store all my music for my dj work.
im using a fujitsu siemens amilo at the moment that came with a already partitioned 11.7gb data D drive that i store my music in now.
is it advisable to make a partition or would it be safer to leave everything on the 200gb C drive.
    thanks
    jim

You can just leave everything on your 200GB drive, it will be fine. And only 20GB for your DJ work? I have around 22GB of Music ALL LEGAL on my laptop right now. My suggestion would be to leave partitions alone, it will be a hindrance when you get more music.

By the way, I get all my music for Itunes for $13 a month, PM me if you want details, its 100% legal.

    Hello mate

Personally I would advise the use of partitions. If your using Vista then at a later date resizing the partition is quick and simple. If you dont use a partition for your music and you get a major problem later requiring a format you will lose all your music. But if you have a partition you only need to format the partition windows is on leaving all your music in place and safe.

Hi Stone825 and thanks for the reply.
All of my Legal music collection consists of almost 14,000 12" records and 4000+ cds. I transfered thousands to cd 10 years ago but they are for my own personal collection and not what i use for my discos. I still use technics 1210s once in a while but its mainly cds now as it certainly saves carrying the records about. what i keep on my laptop is mainly for backup and the most requested genre.
thanks for the offer of itunes but i dont use them any more.

i will wait to see if there are any other ideas and whey up the pros and cons.
    thanks
    jim

    I have napster - unlimited songs for $15 a month + zune/ipods
plus tunebite - legal music conversion - it plays and records

so unlimited unprotected music $15 a month or $10 without zune

and mrdj, I would actually partition a drive for music. If you have that much, it would make it a LOT easier to organize it.

partitions are good for separating/backing up personal data and system files. Saving lots of time when repair or restoring or re.install

    cheers ...

I recently repartitioned my HDD using Parted Magic making more space on D. The OS and programs are on C drive and data, music and photos on D by default using this guide.. I also back up my C and D drives separately on two external HDDs.

There's really no reason to use partitions these days on a home computer. Inevitably you will find that you need to add more space to one of them or the other, and it's a pain. Even though it is a little bit easier now with some tools, it's even easier to leave it as 1 big partition.

That said, many people say to use another partition to store data for recovery reasons, etc... This is very dangerous, because it gives you a false sense of security. No matter what, you will always need to have a BACKUP of all of your data in a place external to your computer. This backup must be updated WEEKLY. If your system has a problem on one partition, there's nothing stopping that problem from affecting the other partitions as well.

when i got my laptop got 2 HDD [both 160gig] one for my os nd program files and 1 for my music, backups, pics, vids, and drivers i may need if i do a fresh install. if you have a spare HDD bay on your laptop why dont you install a smaller[in gigabytes] HDD it will be safer

I left all my games and a few programs on my 2nd partition. When i did a clean install on my primary partition all my games still worked. It saved me alot of time re-installing them and downloading patches

A few programs didnt work though because it needed the old registry

Other than that, its easier to sort out your files on a seperate partition from your OS. Its also easier to recover. At no means should you use it as a backup solution

It's safer and more practical to have a "Storage" Partition. I keep all my Music(50+GB), and other stuff on my 120GB Storage Partition.

BTW ... It's advisable to back-up everything on an external HD.
