Since particularly nasty viruses got thru antivirus software we have been using 2 computers. One solely for internet.

The new laptop has two 500 drives, I assume one drive partitioned.

I know one can even have a totally different system software on a partitioned drive.

Could I use a drive for internet use that could not get to the rest of the computer?

    Thanks all

    windows 7

you would have to dual boot to keep one os separate from another. you could be really unlucky and get a boot sector virus but thats not very likely. you could only use 'safe' sites but whats the point of the internet? have a good virus checker ( i use microsoft security essentials) and a firewall that will check everything in/out, not windows own (i use comodo).
my laptop have several os's (i multi-boot with boot-it which keeps them all seperate) and my gaming os and work server os are normally disabled from the internet (mainly for speed because i do not need any security)
one drive can be partitioned for may os's if you are carefull (all mine are on 1 disk)
    hope that helps

actually, even if you have 2 different physical drives, if windows can see them, so can the virus.
e.g. you have win7 in one drive and winxp(or 7, or any other version) or even an empty drive being used to store files or backups. it is possible for a virus to infect the other drive, coming from your windows7 drive.
i don't know if it is possible for a virus to infect a linux partition from windows7. and also there are the boot sector virus that gazzacbr mentioned.
but please, don't get paranoid with this.

    cheers.
