One problem you possibly encounter with 90% of all software is that its software based.

You need a solution where the actual encryption program is integrated into the encrypted file.

For example - if I encrypt my stuff using my fingerprint, recover my laptop, reregister my fingerprints, I cannot open the folder with it...

(I don't know what happens if I back up thing like passwords etc. before doing a recovery)

So - encryption can be useful, but don't make it software based so that you have to have your computer.

I second truecrypt. I have my T61p whole hardrive encrypted with truecrypt. You cannot get to the boot sector without a password.

I also have all my USB and SD drives as truecrypt encrypted volumes.

There is a online help and tutorial on the truecrypt site.

I read through some stuff before and tried it out briefly but never got the hang of it. All of the tutorials never seemed that straight forward. I think a lot of people would appreciate it if someone made say a tuitorial to use portable trucrypt on a thumb drive/external hard drive.
