Alright so I got this new laptop, and for security reasons, I wanted to set it so that whenever it goes into screen saver or sleep mode, it would ask for password on wakeup. So I went into Control Panel ==> Power Options ==> Choose what closing the lid does ==> Selected require password on wakeup. I also went to screen saver settings and enabled password on return.
The screen saver require password seems to work, but closing the lid does not. I closed the lid and waited till it completely went into sleep mode. Then open the lid and it would wake up and go into windows without asking for a password.
I tried to disable the option and re-enable it but that didnt work either. Tried restarting after changing settings and that whole nine yards, any other ideas?

Have you tried to set this through the oem power application? I know asus and acer have these options built-in. Maybe that would work.

You sure? There actually is no such option on mine.
Under "Choose what closing the lid does", I have "hibernate", "sleep", etc.
And there's a separate setting for "require a password on wakeup". You'll have to set the lid close action to "sleep" and separately set it to require a password on wakeup. -
I am sorry I did not state it clearly, you are correct, I put the setting on sleep and then underneath it there is a box that gives me the choice of to require password or not.
I also checked with my sony oem software, under advanced options there were indeed options for requiring passwords on wake, but those are already set and seems to be ok.
Is there any registry file that I can edit and force it? -
bump....anyone else?

Have you tweaked anything in your Vista install? I require a password when waking from sleep, and when my laptop resumes from sleep or hibernation, it always asks for a password, whether I close the lid or manually enter sleep/hibernation.

I have exactly the same problem. I'm operating Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba U305. I go to "power options", then "require a password on wakeup". I put it to sleep, wake it up -- no password required.
Password protection ok when I shut computer down completely. When I boot it, it requires me to put in password or fingerprint swipe.
I need to secure this computer, so any suggestions welcome. -
As far as I know, these are the two places to set the require password on resume, under power options and under screen saver.
