This post is only meant to open up the discussion

I just read here about the market segmentation that Microsoft is planning for Vista.
It looks like home buyers will have to shell out the big bucks to buy the Windows Vista Home Premium, if they want the Aero look.

Personally I think I could go for the Home Basic, since I dislike graphical hooplas and disableing the Aero would be the first thing that I do, but I am tempted by the extra backup capabalities of the Home Premium.

I would just go for home edition. no need to shell out money for those memory hogging programs.

i plan on getting the home premium...
    a) want aero glass
    b) want media center stuff due to xbox360

    actually...there is something else...
    vista has 3 modes
    classic
    legacy
    aero

    classic is classis
legacy is like aero....just no transparency(pcs that dun meet aero specs will have this)
    aero(transparency)

well...atleast this was how it was a month ago...it might have changed

I'm really excited about Vista but I doubt I'll be getting it anywhere close to it's release date. I'll just have to make due with themes until I can get the actual thing...

I remember reading that article about the different versions ... it said something about an expectation for Premium to be the most downloaded version. A lot of people would be happy to pay for the lower-end versions, but .. well ... we'll see.

IF I buy Vista, it will be Ultimate.

Personally, I'm planning on making the switch to Gentoo Linux before the advent of Vista. I wouldn't pay more for the AeroGlass look because I think it's ugly. I hate 3-D interfaces. My XP is skinned so it's nice and flat. Aero is anything but a selling point for me.

I'll never buy Vista. If I can't get it for free from the MSDNAA at my college, then I'm just going back to Linux.. KDE has transparency and window shadows. You silly people and your eye-candy :)

U need MIn of 64Mb to use the glass.
I have the 5408 on one of my laptops as well.
I have had no problems with crashing, i's been running extremly well for the past 2 days.

Only thing that sucks about the 5308 build is it will not merge with many of the software out right now. MS Office 2003 , Network, Adobe, does work but other programs like Nero,PH3,TU does not work.

Warlord, I'm using Vista Inspirat (free Vista brico pack for XP). I enjoy the look of the screenshot you posted. What program are you using to skin XP?

I'm using WindowBlinds and Styler. There are lots of themes available and the look is pretty close...

I prefer desktop sidebar vs the vista sidebar (which can be ported)
Of course Icon Packager to switch icons and Login Studio to change to a vista login. Here's the only vista user icon I could find.
