Howdy, one of my workmates have a dell laptop (not sure of its model number)

Anyway, i saw that his touchpad/mousepad was able to scroll around on pages. Bascially on the bottom board of the pad it allowed him to scroll left and right, while on the left of the touch pad it allowed him to scroll up and down.

Is this a result of dell's software or is this a modified touchpad

    Thanks...apologise this sounds very awkward.

I believe it is the synaptics touchpad drivers that do that. Other notebooks touchpads can do the same.

Go into Synaptics Touchpad settings in Mouse Properties.

In the left-hand side there is an option called Tap Zones.

    1) On the right, checkmark Enable Tap Zones
    2) Expand Tap Zones in the left-hand side
    3) You can modify the options such as Bottom, Top, Left, Right Actions.

It depends on what touchpad driver you have. All dell laptops that I've seen have the ability to scroll, but you have to enable it. Goto the control panel and look in the Mouse settings. If your touchpad driver is installed correctly, you'll find the option here.

All modern laptops have this ability to enable scrolling, and many more functions by asigning different areas of the touchpad for different functions.

For example my old toshiba allowed me to set the top left hand corner for the "back function" and the top right hand function for the "forward" function.

on Dells this feature comes enabled by default. I think it's the drivers that do it, but there are actual scroll bars drawn on dell touchpad.
