Whichever is cheaper; that way you waste less money.

Why do you say they are a waste of money? What defragmenter do you like? I don't want a free one though, I don't believe in free apps like that except for Firefox, Chrome and other ones.

When you find a defragger from someone who can prove with a verifiable, repeatable test that it makes the computer perform better than Windows' built-in defrag, buy that one.

You might be waiting a while though, because I've never seen any defragger make that claim. Because... it just doesn't matter which defragger you use. If a file's not fragmented, then it's not fragmented.

EDIT: Here's a magazine article (scanned in by forum member notyou) comparing Diskeeper 2008, PerfectDisk, Auslogics, and the Vista built-in defragger: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3722466&postcount=11 ... with performance test results!

Neither. Built-in defrag does a good job. Just don't touch and forget about it, let it do its thing when its scheduled.

Doing a derag manually is better because most of the auto scheduled defrag processes never complete fully at once.

    This might help you:

    http://www.anewmorning.com/2008/08/30/the-5-definitive-best-defragmenter-applications-for-2008/

it lists perfectdisk as better than o&o, but it lists diskeeper as best. I used to use diskkeeper, and it was great.

I should say this though, and I know you don't want to hear it but i'll say it anyway: the goal of commercial programs is to make more money, resulting in their bloating their programs and thereby using more resources/taking up more space at the expense of defrag performance. the goal of freeware programs is to put out the best program possible so that they can make a name for themselves. normally, this results in freeware programs being much better. I use defraggler, you should consider that. It updates frequently and gets better and better (it's from the makers of the highly renowned CCleaner).

also, in operating systems such as XP, and even more so with Vista, defragmenting makes little difference. It used to be a big deal back in early windows versions, which is why the programs still exist, because people think it makes a big difference. It really has a minimal effect. But for sticklers like me and you, why not do it, right?

I'd say, from personal experience, that PerfectDisk is better.

But my opinion might be biased because I like Sherry. :p

Neither, Diskeeper is the best choice ;)
Out of those, I'd say is PerfectDisk is better, although I haven't tried the latest version of O&O.

I use it and like it, so I vote for Diskeeper 2009 too, although it's not listed in the poll!
